Martin family lawyer known for civil rights cases

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? When Benjamin Crump got his first call from Trayvon Martin's father last month, the attorney counseled patience.

It had only been two days since a neighborhood watch volunteer had fatally shot the 17-year-old, and surely an arrest was imminent, thought Crump, who has pursued several civil rights cases against law enforcement agencies.

Another day passed. Nothing.

Two more days passed. Still nothing.

"I believed in my heart of hearts they were going to arrest him," Crump said Thursday in an interview. "I said, 'Oh, they are going to arrest him. You don't need me on this.'"

More than a month later, there still has been no arrest.

But thanks largely to Crump's efforts, the case has stirred marches and rallies around the nation, merited comment from President Barack Obama, led to the resignation of the Sanford police chief and brought scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice into this Orlando suburb of 55,000 residents.

"When you have the president commenting on the matter and you have celebrities and politicians wearing their hoodies as a symbol of the cause that you're representing, and it has taken over the world's attention, this is overwhelming in a sense," said Crump, who was in Washington for several days of meeting with members of Congress and appearing on national news shows. "We've been pushing relentlessly day and night."

Crump's strategy for making the case international news began with a series of heart-wrenching news conferences in which Martin's parents spoke about their loss. Florida media outlets began to notice. Then, he enlisted U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown to help convince authorities to release 911 tapes, recordings that brought the case to the attention of national media. He's further ratcheted pressure on authorities by organizing a series of rallies and working with national civil rights figures such as Al Sharpton.

The push began not long after Martin's death on the night of Feb. 26. Martin, wearing a hoodie, was walking home from a Sanford, Fla. convenience store when he was spotted by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who called a police dispatcher to report Martin as suspicious. There was a confrontation, and Martin was shot. Zimmerman has told detectives he shot Martin in self-defense.

Martin's death raises questions about the role of vigilantism, racial profiling and Florida's self-defense laws. Under those laws, a person isn't obligated to retreat in a threatening situation. Zimmerman's father has said his son wasn't profiling Martin and that he isn't racist. Zimmerman's mother is Hispanic and his father is white.

Crump was first contacted by a cousin of Trayvon Martin's father. The cousin, a Miami attorney, was familiar with Crump's civil rights work in Florida. Before Martin's death, Crump was best known for representing the parents of a teenage boy who died after an encounter with guards at a Florida boot camp in 2006. The videotaped beating of Martin Lee Anderson attracted national attention and led to the closure of the state's boot camps for juvenile offenders.

Crump, 42, and his wife, Genae Angelique Crump, are raising two teenage boys who are the biological sons of Crump's cousin. The oldest is Martin's age.

"Trayvon hits home on many levels," Crump said.

Crump and his law partner, Daryl Parks, are Tallahassee-based personal injury attorneys who primarily handle wrongful death and negligence cases. But their everyday work often involves civil rights issues.

"Daryl and Ben look at things in a broader perspective," said James Messer, a Tallahassee attorney who serves on the board of the Tallahassee Bar Association with Crump. "While there may be a wrongful death issue, it involves, in their eyes, more than anything a civil rights cause ... (Crump) has a passion for issues that have something to do with civil rights violations."

Crump's advocacy on behalf of Martin's family has gotten the attention of established civil rights leaders. Both Sharpton and Jesse Jackson flew down to Sanford to participate in rallies and a meeting before the Sanford city commission.

"He has integrity, smarts and an uncanny ability," Jackson said about Crump. "He is not flashy. He is just kind of a basic, old, solid-thinking, country lawyer."

Crump gets the "country" part from growing up in Lumberton, N.C., a tiny town not far from Fort Bragg. His mother held down two jobs as a factory worker and hotel housekeeper. His biological father was a soldier at Fort Bragg. He was raised by his mother and her high school sweetheart who later became her husband. Crump regards him as his father. The oldest of nine siblings and step-siblings, Crump grew up in an extended family of cousins, uncles and aunts headed by his beloved great-grandmother, Mittie.

"She had a switch in her hand when we came home from school. She would ask what we learned in school that day, and she used that switch to enforce the importance of that question," Crump said of his great-grandmother.

Crump would spend all day every Sunday in Pentecostal church, often missing the chance to watch his Dallas Cowboys play on television. The influence of the church is visible in his public speeches when he often sounds more like a preacher than a lawyer. His interest in civil rights stems from attending segregated schools until he was in fifth grade.

"It was a situation to me, that I said, 'Why do people on that side of the tracks have it so much better than people on our side of the tracks?'" he said.

When Crump was in high school, his mother sent him to Fort Lauderdale to live with the man he regarded as his father so he could have a male influence and be exposed to the culture that the bigger city offered.

He attended college and law school and Florida State University, where he met Parks, his future law partner. In his personal statement for law school, he said his hero was Thurgood Marshall, the U.S. Supreme Court's first black justice. After graduating, Parks and Crump formed their own law firm, Tallahassee-based, Parks and Crump.

Crump dodges the question of how, and if, he is being compensated by Trayvon Martin's parents.

"You do it because it's the right thing to do," he said. "As long as you make your goal to do right and do good, all of the money and financial material stuff will come."

Video from our FREE Online Business Course www.myownbusiness.org Session 3 ? Computer & Communication Tools Question ?Do you recommend business owners use accounting software and why?? Ken Blake Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Topics covered in this video: Small business accounting, accounting software, accountants Transcript: Most business owners will realize some definite advantages if they get a software program to handle their accounting. The main purpose with accounting software is that it allows the easy production of reports verses having to sit down with manual records and trying to put together your reports. So there is not a lot of time saving when you use the accounting programs except when you get to the report level and that?s where the value comes in. As far as the type of program, what I always recommend is that people talk to their accountant before they jump into a program. It?s so easy to buy something off the shelf and then realize after getting back to the place of business that it might not be for the company. If you have an accountant that?s familiar with your business, there is a lot of software out there that especially designed for certain industries. So if your accountant deals in your industry, he can put you in touch with the software that would be specific for your company. This will allow you to bypass a lot of the set-up time and go right into some relevant accounting helped by the accountant who is familiar with the software. Even if your ?

Promotion Techniques For Your Ebook | creativeadworks.com

One of the best businesses in the world is the ebook business. This is a great business to be in if you?re looking for a great lifestyle business. You can earn money while you sleep, your products are instantly fulfilled, there?s very little customer service, you can earn high profits, and you don?t have to put anything into inventory, or use a dropshipper service. This is a business that is extremely good to be in.

But to make money from your ebooks, you have to promote them. There are many ways to promote your ebook online, but only about a handful of these things will bring you the most traffic. I think you should find time out of your day to promote your business for at least 4 hours. That?s 4 hours per day that you should be using to make your ebook business a success.

Now if you?re busy like me, 4 hours flies by pretty quickly. And it may fly by as fast for you also. It all depends on what you?re doing, and how you?re spending your time on the internet. Sometimes selling ebooks can be a hassle, but if you master the basics, you?ll start to see sales from it in a short period of time.

You have to keep at it and believe that your ebook business will work. You put alot of effort into creating the ebook, now it?s time for you to reap the rewards of your hard work. Now all that is needed is a great marketing strategy to help spread the word out about your ebook.

If you?ve never sold an ebook in your life and want to see sales coming in quickly? sell your product for $7. If you market your business in the right way, you will get quick $7 sales very frequently. Stay true to your niche, and watch how many sales you acquire over the course of an entire year. It can be truly phenomenal.

To make money with your ebook, you have to switch from ?entrepreneur? into ?expert marketer? mode. No matter what your ebook is about or what niche you?re in, the bottom line is that you?re in the ?internet marketing? business. If you can?t drive people to your website and get them to buy, then you will have built your ebook for nothing. And it?s a shame that it would have to go to waste like that.

Instead, keep your eyes on the prize, and implement key marketing techniques that you can use to improve your sales and profits immediately. Some of these strategies include video marketing, article marketing, forum marketing, blog marketing, podcast marketing, joint venture marketing, affiliate marketing, and even press release marketing. All of these online marketing tactics can be used to get you the results you?re looking for.

Now don?t expect to get sales overnight; unless you?re using advertising. If you?re using paid advertising (like PPC), and you invest alot of money upfront, then there?s probably a good chance that you will wake up with sales in the morning. What you will want to keep your eyes on is whether or not your profiting or breaking even on each sale ? instead of losing money for every customer that you get. You have to do the math in your business, and this is very important. So get to it today.

These ebook marketing tips will help you to get the sales that you need to profit in today?s economic climate. Keep using these tips, and watch as your income grows after a short period of time.

Good luck with marketing your ebook online successfully today.

UN panel ties some weather extremes to warming

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Warming has led to changes in climate extremes such as heat waves, record high temperatures and, in many regions, heavy precipitation since 1950, the U.N. climate panel warned in a report Wednesday.

"It is very likely that there has been an overall decrease in the number of cold days and nights, and an overall increase in the number of warm days and nights, at the global scale," the scientists wrote.

Some populations are already living on the edge?of disaster, given the projected increases in the magnitude or frequency of some extreme events in many regions, the report stated.

"Small increases in climate extremes above thresholds or regional infrastructure 'tipping points' have the potential to result in large increases in damages to all forms of existing infrastructure," the experts said.

In the past, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has focused on the?gradual rise of temperatures and oceans. This report is the first to look at less common but far more noticeable extreme weather changes, which lately have been costing on average about $80 billion a year in damage.

The study forecasts that some tropical cyclones -- which include hurricanes in the United States -- will be stronger, while the frequency might diminish.

"Average tropical cyclone maximum wind speed is likely?to increase, although increases may not occur in all ocean basins," the experts?stated. "It is likely that the global frequency of tropical cyclones will either decrease or remain essentially unchanged."

Some other specific changes in severe weather that the scientists said they had the most confidence in predicting include more heat waves and record hot temperatures worldwide and increased downpours in Alaska, Canada, northern and central Europe, East Africa and north Asia.

"We mostly experience weather and climate through the extreme," said one of the report's top editors, Chris Field, an ecologist with the Carnegie Institution of Washington. "That's where we have the losses. That's where we have the insurance payments. That's where things have the potential to fall apart.

Read the full report from the IPCC

"There are lots of places that are already marginal for one reason or another," Field said. But it's not just poor areas: "There is disaster risk almost everywhere."

At 592 pages long, the report elaborates on a summary of findings released last November.

The report specifically points to New Orleans during 2005's Hurricane Katrina, noting that "developed countries also suffer severe disasters because of social vulnerability and inadequate disaster protection."

In coastal areas of the United States, property damage from hurricanes and rising seas could increase by 20 percent by 2030, the report said. And in parts of Texas, the area vulnerable to storm surge could more than double by 2080.

Already, U.S. insured losses from weather disasters have soared from an average of about $3 billion a year in the 1980s to about $20 billion a year in the last decade, even after adjusting for inflation, said Mark Way, director of sustainability at insurance giant Swiss Re. Last year that total rose to $35 billion, but much of that was from tornadoes, which scientists are unable to connect with global warming. U.S. insured losses are just a fraction of the overall damage from weather disasters each year.

The scientists say that some places, particularly parts of Mumbai in India, could become uninhabitable from floods, storms and rising seas. In 2005, over 24 hours nearly 3 feet of rain fell on the city, killing more than 1,000 people and causing massive damage. Roughly 2.7 million people live in areas at risk of flooding.

The IPCC and former Vice President Al Gore won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts around climate change.

Since then,?the IPCC?has also come under fire from those questioning whether warming can be attributed to mankind's burning of fossil fuels. Critics found a flawed analysis of Himalayan glacier melt, and a few other questionable data, but overall the thousands of pages of IPCC documents have stood the test of scientific review.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

'Bully' Will Be Released Unrated

Weinstein Co. is releasing the documentary on bullying unrated in a protest against an R.
By Gil Kaufman

A Scene from "Bully"

Actors, singers, politicians, educators and high school kids have been protesting the R rating given to the anti-bullying documentary "Bully, but the ratings board would not budge. So, instead of folding, frequently outspoken Weinstein Co. co-founder Harvey Weinstein has decided to release the film unrated.

"The small amount of language in the film that's responsible for the R rating is there because it's real," director Lee Hirsch said of the multiple f-bombs that landed the film its restricted rating, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "It's what the children who are victims of bullying face on most days. All of our supporters see that, and we're grateful for the support we've received across the board. I know the kids will come, so it's up to the theaters to let them in."

The film depicts the painful results of school bullying and follows several families who've been impacted by bullying. But because it was given an R rating, it cannot be screened in middle and high schools.

Weinstein began a public appeal of the rating last month, making the case that it would freeze out the very teens and others under 18 who most need to hear its powerful message.

The rating war inspired 17-year-old Katy Butler to start a viral petition to get the decision changed. Not only did her movement win her a GLAAD Media Awards
over the weekend, but it also drew nearly 500,000 signatures and support from the likes of Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Johnny Depp and Ellen DeGeneres.

Though unrated films are often shut out of many theater chains out of respect for the ratings board, the CEO of the AMC chain, Gerry Lopez, said he will allow certain theaters in his circuit to screen the movie. "Bully" opens on March 30 in New York and Los Angeles. The movie has gotten another unlikely partner in the form of computing giant Microsoft. According to The Los Angeles Times, Microsoft has agreed to use its Bing search engine to promote "Bully" with a TV and social media ad campaign.

Gory fight scenes, breath taking special effects or just plain mushy love songs? Every film scene requires a good editor. But it?s no longer the dark editing rooms that these film-tailors are restricted to.With more and more films being shot on digital cameras, editors are now stepping out on to the sets to make creative cuts.

While earlier, in the ?90s, editing on the sets was used extensively while making ad films, this trend is slowly catching the attention of Hindi filmmakers too.

The benefits of this are two-fold. While it saves a lot of time and reduces costs for filmmakers, editors can actually visualise what a scene will look like on location and how it would eventually translate onto the screen. Likewise, directors get to witness how a scene shot on location would look on screen and hence make the necessary changes on the sets itself.

A lot of Hindi film editors like Shirish Kunder, Chandan Arora, Namrata Rao and Kuldeep Mehan have used this technique in their films ? Main Hoon Na, Company, Ishqiya and Haunted respectively. And with time, more films?like Abhishek Kapoor?s Amdavad, Rakesh Roshan?s Krrish 3, Raaz 3 and Remo D?Souza?s Any Body Can Dance (ABCD) are all being shot with the edit-on-set technique.

Asif Ali Shaikh, editor of Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, says, ?Editors are no longer just technicians. Their role is now that of avisualiser. Sometimes, especially when the shoot is on at an outdoor location, where the lighting tends to play hide and-seek, we have to be present on the sets to make sure a scene looks fine post the edit.?

He adds, ?If there are any discrepancies in the shot, having the editor on the sets really helps as we can do away with the errors or tell the director if a bad shot can be rectified later in post-production.?

Earlier, only the cameraman was able to see through his camera?s view finder and tell the director what a shot would look like on screen. The director had no other option but to take the editor?s word for it.Then came a phase when editors began using video-assist to show directors what a scene looked like before the edit. It is still sometimes used and is a system used in filmmaking, which allows the filmmakers to view a video version of a take immediately after it is filmed. A wire is attached to the camera, which translates the shot on to a small monitor, almost like a tiny TV screen.

This technology was used for quite some time while films were being shot on35 mm. It was mainly to give the director a rough idea of what a shot looked like.It didn?t however point out the qualityof lighting or the colour gradation. But with new cameras like the RED and Arri, editing-on-the-sets have become far easier.

Editor Chandan Arora says, ?Edit-on the?sets is a technique that helps a filmmaker when a lot of special effects are used or a lot of precision is required fora shot. Since most films these days are being shot in the digital format, editing is becoming more advanced and easier.?

According to editor Kuldip Mehan, this technology has been borrowed from Hollywood, where there is a line producer always present on the sets. ?Editing is usually done on two machines, the first pro cut or FCP and Avid. There was a?huge demand for FCP as it was cheaper compared to Avid and could be used on a MAC machine. But now even the cost of Avid has come down, making both a favourite among editors.?

Mehan specialises in 3D filmsand has worked on films like Haunted. He is now working on both Raaz 3 and Dangerous Ishq, which are both being shot in 3D.

He says, ?It is easier to edit a film which is shot in 3D rather than a 2D film which is converted to 3D as the final output in both can vary drastically. Edit-on-the-sets is thus very helpful for films which are shotin stereoscopic 3D as it saves both, time and the cost.?

However, while some editors are gung ho about filmmakers going digital and using edit-on-the-sets extensively, others like Namrata Rao are more inclined to old school ways of editing post shooting. She used edit-on-the sets for the films Ishqiya and also during Kahaani.

?Editors should be kept away from theshoot to be able to edit the film more objectively.I know edit-on-the-sets is easy and convenient but I feel it tampers with the editor?s creativity.?

Travel photo of the day: View from Cinque Terre

Submitted by Amelia Schroeder / UGC

Village of Vernazza in Italy's Cinque Terre region.

Italy's Cinque Terre region, a cluster of villages along the country's northwestern coast, is famous for its pastel houses and gorgeous views.

Amelia Schroeder, who visited the area in August 2011, took this picture of a typical hillside view. She spent two days there hiking the trails that connect the several villages.

Schroeder visited just before flooding and mudslides devastated the region, closing business and trails. We're happy to report, though, that Cinque Terre is recovering. (See: Italy's Cinque Terre region readies for spring tourists).

The famous ?Via dell?Amore? (?Love?s path?) trail is open and tour companies plan to continue offering guided walking and hiking trips this spring.

Mixed Martial Arts Clothing: Wear And Beware

Clothes and martial arts have develop into fused right into a culture, a life style, as well as a visible statement of who you are and what you stand for.

I?ve frequently mentioned just how vital convenience and mental clarity is for performing martial arts. That which you put on and how you feel regarding it goes a long approach to defining your state of thoughts whilst training the art form. I found that out the hard way once i began training. I did not have the best clothing and it made a difference in how I felt.

Believe you me, getting within the suitable gear can adjust every thing about the way you strategy coaching or competing the area of martial arts. It made a difference to me, I can tell you. After you are fighting or coaching as well as your pants or shirt just don?t feel correct, it may ruin your concentration. I have been there just before. You would not raise weights or perform baseball in a 3 piece go well with or dress. Martial arts is no distinct.

But with the proper gear, it just, I don?t know, it just feels proper. Every thing flows greater, a lot easier and faster due to what you might be sporting. It has a calming or maybe energetic impact in your mental state of being if you put on clothes that fits well and looks good. Colors can have an effect on the mood of individuals. I like blue and grey and when i wear these colors to practice or fight in, I feel better, far more effective.

Luckily for all of us martial artists, there has been an explosion of sorts in the sport and that implies there is plenty of terrific clothes to be had. We?ve a great number of fantastic t-shirts and unique designs to selected from, it makes selecting what you would like to wear easy. Truly, the sole challenging component I located regarding it was determining what to put on! There were too quite a few things that I liked once i went searching on line for all of the out there combined martial arts clothes.

Each of the greats in the activity are beginning to pick up on this new and exciting fashion pattern. I am proud to wear it. It can be like becoming part of a brotherhood. It feels actually nice to assistance an activity that has been so superior to me. They?ve hats, t-shirts and all sorts of bottoms to wear though you will be coaching as well as competitors gear to allow you to genuinely get it on.

Numerous UFC (Ultimate Combating Championship) fighters put on this stuff and i think it appears pretty sweet. I am aware the chicks dig it mainly because I get a good deal of feedback when i gown for accomplishment. It is remarkable just how much more confidence you?ve whenever you put on something that gives you that distinctive sensation of convenience and performance.

Are there posers Obviously. An excess fat man in a Colts or Bears jersey most likely does not perform football. A skinny runt inside a Big apple Rangers hat commonly does not skate backwards. Simply because an excess fat man has on a TapOut or Submit Gear tshirt doesn?t imply he does or does not know jujitsu.

I can?t additional extremely recommend selecting up some mixed martial arts clothes and attempting it out oneself. If something is just not experience ideal about your training program, it may possibly be the garments you?re sporting. I am aware switching created a huge distinction in my existence. As well as, what is greater than representing your activity by decking oneself out in the most up-to-date fashion within your chosen sport

Stroke risk lower among women who drink moderately: study

(Reuters) - Women who drink up to seven glasses of wine or beer a week are slightly less likely to suffer a stroke than those who steer clear of alcohol, according to a U.S. study that covered thousands of women for nearly 30 years.

The results, published in the journal Stroke, fall in line with guidelines from the American Heart Association that recommend women have no more than one drink a day -- but that doesn't mean people should take up drinking to stave off strokes, researchers said.

"We do not encourage women who do not currently drink to initiate drinking," said Monik Jimenez, a researcher at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, who led the study.

"Alcohol is a double-edged sword, because higher levels can increase high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation, which are risk factors for stroke as well," she told Reuters Health.

Several previous reports have shown that low levels of alcohol drinking are tied to a smaller chance of having a stroke.

Jimenez and her colleagues used data from the massive Nurses' Health Study, which tracked the health, diet and lifestyle of more than 83,000 middle-aged women for 26 years.

They compared the drinking habits of women in the study who had had a stroke, to women who hadn't, dividing the women into five categories: from those who never drank, to the heaviest drinkers who had at least two and a half beers or two shots' worth of hard liquor or about three glasses of wine a day.

Of the roughly 25,000 women who never drank, about four percent had a stroke at some point during the study.

In contrast, two percent of the more than 29,000 women who had up to half a drink a day on average had a stroke. And of those downing between a half glass and a full glass daily, just one in 200 ended up suffering a stroke.

After the researchers took into account certain risk factors for stroke, such as smoking, being overweight and a history of heart disease, they found that having up to one drink a day was linked to a 17 to 21 percent lower chance of having a stroke.

The study didn't prove that alcohol prevented the strokes, and there's no known explanation for the relationship between the two.

It may have something to do with socioeconomic status, said Cheryl Bushnell of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, who was not involved in the study and noted that lower socioeconomic status is known to be linked with a higher risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

"My thought is that alcohol costs money. And I think that people who may be drinking light to moderate amounts with a meal are basically people who may have slightly higher means to buy that," Bushnell told Reuters Health.

"It's something that's a lifestyle."

But she did say that it's possible alcohol itself is responsible for the lower stroke risk. Jimenez suggested that alcohol might do so by preventing blood clots or altering cholesterol levels.

Her study did not show an increased risk of stroke among the women who drank the most, but other research has suggested that possibility. One found that having several drinks was actually linked to an increased risk of stroke in the next 24 hours. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/GGh2Xz

Google may be rethinking its Wallet strategy, cutting in carriers

Things haven?t been going too smoothly for Google Wallet. The mobile payment service has hit a few bumps since its release, including a security hole that showed up earlier this month and since has been fixed.

But Google is reportedly still seeing slow adoption of the service, and is looking for ways to shore that up. According to a story from Bloomberg, Google is considering cutting in cellular carriers on its Wallet revenue in order to encourage more carriers to adopt the service and bring it to their Android devices.

Google Wallet is a payment service that allows users to store information about their credit cards, loyalty cards and other similar things that one might normally find in a wallet in their smartphones instead. The idea is that users have everything they need in one place. With near field communication technology found in some Android smartphones, users can just tap their phones to special terminals at retail stores and they?ve paid for their transaction instantly, because their phone sent the payment information to the register.

As Bloomberg notes, however, adoption of the service has been slow. Not all the U.S. carriers support it, after all. Verizon, for example, has cast its lot with Isis, a similar payment service being spearheaded by several credit card companies. Citing an unnamed source, the report claims that Google is discussing sharing revenue with AT&T and Verizon to encourage them to adopt the service and to carry more NFC-enabled smartphones to make it work.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg says Google is actively working on the other side of Wallet, which consists of creating partnerships with businesses and retailers in order to push coupons and deals to consumers. Targeting Wallet users correctly can get them into stores and using the service, which earns Google advertising money for the coupons ? money it may well split with cellular carriers.

Google Wallet has been an initiative that Google has seemed to be excited about for some time, but it has hit some roadblocks of late. The tech giant recently shut down Wallet?s ability to work with prepaid credit cards because of a security liability that was discovered in the service. In the last few days, Google reinstated prepaid card capability with its app, and offered users $5 for the inconvenience. Still, it doesn?t seem as though the security issue didn?t help Google?s image.

The carrier revenue sharing plan may well help to push Google Wallet to more users, but the trouble really seems to be getting more NFC-enabled smartphones in users? hands, and in getting them comfortable trading their wallets for just their phones. It seems like an easy transition, but Google will need to convince users that they don?t have anything to worry about if they trust their phone to protect their money.

Campaign grind takes its toll on GOP candidates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's a good thing the GOP presidential race slows down from here: The candidates are even more tired than the voters. And, boy, does it show.

Mitt Romney, who scaled back his public schedule this week to get a break, has slept in his own bed just twice since Christmas. Rick Santorum's been making the kind of flubs that come with exhaustion. Newt Gingrich got caught sleeping on camera a few weeks back, and looked like he just might topple over.

And then there's 76-year-old Ron Paul, last in the delegate hunt. The oldest candidate in the race, Paul is running a campaign that's a study in Ever. So. Slow. Pacing.

Maybe that's why he seemed so chipper when he turned up on the "The Tonight Show" this week, chatting about an exercise regimen that "helps my brain relax" while the other candidates were scrambling for every last vote in Illinois.

Does it matter if the candidates are exhausted? Oh, yeah.

That's when they make mistakes, get testy and lose perspective. At best, they may just seem to be off stride, muffing key lines and sounding, well, tired.

That can hurt, especially in an election year when the president is able to cruise into the general election without a primary fight. Barack Obama's still got a country to run, and he's already scheduling lots of fundraisers, but it's nothing like the pace of his opponents.

In an odd sort of way, there can be an upside to the brutal grind of campaign life.

"You do get the snot beaten out of you," Rep. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said after she dropped out of the race earlier this year. But she went on to say that it's a good way to sort out the very toughest candidates for "the toughest job in the world."

"It made me a better person," she said.

Small comfort to Romney, Santorum and Gingrich, who have been slogging through the week-in, week-out grind of primaries, fundraisers, town halls, interviews, hotel rooms and airplane food.

"I woke up this morning and found I did not have any shirts that would be appropriate for a fundraiser, so I had to wash my shirt out in the sink," Romney confessed Tuesday, in an interview sandwiched between a Chicago fundraiser and an Illinois victory party. "And then I thought, 'How am I going to get this thing dried fast enough?' So I got the iron out. It took me about 20 minutes to iron it dry. The collar is finally dry."

Dee Dee Myers, Bill Clinton's press secretary during the 1992 campaign and then at the White House, recalls that Clinton "made all of his worst mistakes when he was tired."

"But when every primary feels like a single-elimination contest, you can't afford to take a day off," she said.

Overall, Myers said, Romney seems to showing the stamina of the "Energizer bunny." But she said the Republicans also seem to be suffering from a lack of "message discipline" as they dart from one event to the next without taking time to think through exactly what they want voters to hear.

"That's probably a function of getting tired," she said.

After Saturday's voting in Louisiana, the candidates get a 10-day break before Washington, D.C., Maryland and Wisconsin hold primaries on April 3. That's a welcome respite, but there still will be ads to cut, supporters to cajole, money to raise and all the rest.

The lighter schedule is coming none too soon.

Santorum, Romney's chief rival, has had to backpedal on a series of ill-thought remarks in recent days, prompting him to wish for a "do-over" after saying the unemployment rate wasn't a crucial issue to his campaign.

Some missteps aren't all that surprising when a recent ? and typical ? campaign day for Santorum had events or interviews scheduled for 8 a.m., 9:05 a.m., 9:15 a.m. 10 a.m., 10:20 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m., 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in seven cities in Illinois and Missouri, followed by a late-night flight in stormy weather to Louisiana for church services the next morning.

"At the age of 53, with seven children ages 20 to 3, it's not exactly the best time to be going out and running for president of the United States," he said last weekend in Effingham, Ill. He'll sometimes sprint home to McLean, Va., for less than a day of down time with his family before revving back up for another long stretch of campaigning.

Santorum will catch a break wherever he can get one. That left him apologizing last week after a less-than-flattering photo surfaced of him asnooze, shirtless, in a chaise lounge during a campaign stop in Puerto Rico.

"I'm sure that's not a pretty sight," he allowed.

Gingrich appears to still be working on perfecting the power nap.

Earlier this month he drifted off, on camera, while waiting for his turn to address a live-streamed meeting of a pro-Israel lobby.

"I understand you have a panel," he told the moderator as he snapped open his eyes. "I look forward to any questions."

An awkward pause ensued while Gingrich waited for questions.

"Mr. Speaker, there is not a panel," the moderator informed him. "Please do continue, sir."

Gingrich may have done himself more good by staying up until 2 a.m. dancing with his wife, Callista, at a hotel lounge in Jackson, Miss., a few days later.

The former House speaker later pronounced it great fun, and called it a "two-hour vacation."

Early on, Gingrich caught grief for taking a couple weeks off the campaign to take his wife on a Mediterranean cruise, and he still gets home many weekends to rest and attend Callista's Sunday choir performances, but he's put in his share of late nights campaigning.

And that's when he's prone to loosen up and get a little punchy, producing what reporters call "late-night Newt" performances.

On one recent evening, Gingrich tested out possible bumper sticker and T-shirt slogans, such as "With Newt, Drill Here, Pay Less," and "Barack Obama, Pay More, Pay Weird."

Romney, for his part, savors the rare chance to sleep in his own bed.

"Oh, boy, we're headed home," he said earlier this month when the primary calendar gave him a pit stop in his home state of Massachusetts after two straight months on the road.

He knew it wouldn't last, though.

"Tomorrow, we wake up and we start again. And the next day, we'll do the same," Romney said. "And so we'll go, day by day, step by step, door by door, heart to heart. There will be good days. There will be bad days. Always long hours, never enough time to get everything done."

Maybe not enough time to wash his shirt. But, hey, Romney says at least he gets "a lot of frequent flyer points," for staying at all those hotels.

And on Romney's campaign bus, the candidate can count on a never-ending supply of one of his favorite comfort foods: peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

Ellen Vows Legal Battle

President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has vowed to ?wage legal battle? against people who she says are involved in using the media ?for personal gains to wrongfully accuse and malign others.?

The Liberian leader?s assertion was contained in remarks she made last Friday, March 16, 2012, when she spoke at a ceremony marking the commissioning of cabinet ministers, at her Foreign Ministry office, on Capitol Hill, Monrovia.

Hear President Johnson-Sirleaf: ?We must also wage legal battle against those who for personal gains use the media to wrongfully accuse and maliciously malign others.?

She stated that those engaged in such act have gone to the point of assassinating the character of some of Liberia?s development partners, adding: ?It has gone to the point of assassinating the character of those who partner with us in our development effort.?

She disclosed: ?A case in point is when people ruined the long fought and maintained reputation of someone by accusing them wrongfully, by getting people for small sums of money to lie on somebody; something that does damage beyond repair, we are going to go after them too.?

The Liberian leader, who fell short of disclosing the names of those she accused of such act, pointed out that: ?We know some of you who also participate in paying young people to be able to go and say things on the air and thereby bring under question those who have worked hard.?

?I want you to know that I know who you are,? she among others added.

Marmageddon: New Zealand runs out of unique spread

(AP Photo/New Zealand Herald, Sarah Ivey) NEW ZEALAND OUT, AUSTRALIA OUT

(AP) ? It's a sticky black sandwich spread that much of New Zealand adores, though detractors liken it to axle grease. And when it runs out, it's Marmageddon.

The manufacturer of Marmite says its supplies of the yeast-extract product ran out this week, four months after earthquakes forced it to close the only factory that made New Zealand's version.

"Don't freak. We will be back soon!" the company, Sanitarium, says on the Marmite website. But there are signs of freaking in this country of 4.4 million people, which eats its way through 640 metric tons of the savory spread every year.

"I can confirm there was a rush on Marmite yesterday," Antoinette Shallue, spokeswoman for the grocery chain Foodstuffs, said in an email. "Clearly Kiwis took the news of the impending shortage very seriously!"

Some are calling the crisis "Marmageddon." Others are auctioning their supplies of Marmite online. Even the country's leader sounds concerned.

"I'm going to have to go thin I'm afraid. I have a very small amount in my office and once that runs out I'm obviously aware that supplies are very short," Prime Minister John Key told television station TV3 on Tuesday.

At the risk of angering Marmite fans, Key went on say that he could also eat Vegemite, a rival spread that is made in Australia.

Both Marmite and Vegemite are made from yeast extract. Marmite was launched in England and, at first, was imported into New Zealand. But by 1919, New Zealand had come up with its own version, which differs in taste significantly from the English version.

As a result, importing English Marmite simply won't work, said Pierre van Heerden, Sanitarium's general manager.

"People have grown up with Marmite. It's an iconic New Zealand brand," van Heerden said. He's advising people to use their remaining supplies sparingly: for instance, by spreading Marmite on warm toast, so that it goes further, or on just one side of the bread in double sandwiches.

The problem traces back to a series of earthquakes in the city of Christchurch that last year killed 185 people and destroyed many buildings. In November, Sanitarium decided the quake damage was severe enough it needed to close its Christchurch factory, the only one that makes the New Zealand style of Marmite. This week, it ran out of supplies.

Supermarkets still have some jars left, but they're going fast.

"We anticipate running out of stock of Marmite in the next two to three weeks across all our stores, and unfortunately we have no control of the situation," Murray Johnston, general manager of merchandise at grocery chain Progressive Enterprises, wrote in an email.

Van Heerden said he has kept the 25 people who make Marmite on the payroll and hopes to resume production by July ? when either the factory will be repaired or the production line will be moved.

In the meantime, one would-be entrepreneur has listed a jar of Marmite for a minimum bid of 3,500 New Zealand dollars ($2,900) on the auction site Trade Me, admitting that: "Seal broken, had to take a couple of toasts worth just to say goodbye to my prized Marmite."

Nobody has placed a bid.

Get up to gear with cycling equipment

Whether you are new to the world of biking, or a seasoned enthusiast, cycling equipment is an essential part of the biking experience, and so this guide will brief you on the essentials.

Cycling tools ? Ensuring that you are prepared if you puncture a tire or if a wheel comes loose means having the right tools to hand. A multi tool set is the easiest way to get everything you need, with important things like tyre levers, chain tool heads, Allen wrenches, chain hooks, and disc brake repair bits. With such an item you can rejoin a broken chain, mend a brake pad or a displaced cable for instance, and this tool is often the difference between mending the bike yourself, and making an emergency call. Bear in mind that all of these bits of cycling equipment are available individually. Puncture repair kits and tire pumps should be number one on your wish list, as punctures are inevitable but easily treatable if you have a good kit, and flat tires are just as common.

Mini pumps are a great option since they store away easily.

Lubricants and cleaners ? Keeping your bike in top condition means conditioning the moving parts of the bike. Lubricants for the pedals and axles, and chain cleaner for the chain eliminates squeaks, protects against rust, and increases the longevity of the bike on the whole. General bike cleaner can be used as a safe way to wash the entire bike.

Technology ? A serious biker needs a cycle computer, which gauges the amount of cycling you have done, and your heart rate. GPS trackers provide accurate location information for touring and training.

Safety ? Cycle helmets are crucial for cycling safety.

General helmets are common for everyday use, though for the serious rider fibreglass face helmets are a better option and are highly affordable given the protection they give. Front and back Halogen or LED lights are crucial for visibility at night. Visibility jackets are also a good idea. Safety locks keep your cycle safe when you park, and high quality D-locks provide the best middle ground between protection and affordability.

Accessories ? There are many other things to make riding easier, such as water bottles and bottle cages, panniers and racks, prop stands, horns and bells, frame and bike protectors, front baskets, bicycle pads, and hydration backpacks.

Having a full range of cycling equipment means getting the best out of your bike and staying safe.?
