Want Easy Business Management? There's an App for That ...

Dropbox on HTC Desire Android

If you have a smartphone or tablet, chances are you know a lot about gaming and entertainment apps. Whether you?re traveling, at home or with friends, apps like Angry Birds and Words with Friends are popular ways to pass your time.

What some users don?t realize, though, is there is a very high number of business management tools available from the app stores. Whether you oversee iPad repairs or design custom-made furniture, these business apps are fabulous tools for keeping connected to your clients.

Here are four simple apps that can make your workday a whole lot easier.

Dropbox

Do you worry about transferring files from your home to the office? This free app makes it easy to take all your data with you wherever you go. This app is especially useful if you?re in a global market and always need to stay connected to your outsource depot services partners or publishing branch overseas.

After you install the Dropbox app on your computer, you can view all of your files, documents and photos on any device at any time. Once you do so, the app allows you to access all your computer files right on your smartphone, tablet or even another computer. Dropbox also gives you the option to save files as favorites for easy access.

Scanner Pro

This app sells for $4.99 but is well worth the price. The Scanner Pro, as its name suggests, turns your smartphone or tablet into a fully functional scanner. It?s a wonderful tool if you need to upload a document to an email but don?t have a scanner nearby.

To use the scanner, first take a picture of the item. From there, you can crop and edit the image and set a custom page size. The app will process the image to create industry-standard PDF files. You can even set a password to protect your documents.

Fax it

If you?re looking for more uses for your Scanner Pro, download the Fax it app! This app allows you to take MS Office Documents and the PDFs you create from apps like Scanner Pro and sent them to contacts? fax machines. What?s great about this app is it doesn?t require a monthly fee for service. Besides the purchase price of $3.99, faxes are just $0.40 per page and the cover page is free.

Office2 Plus

The Office2 Plus has incredible smartphone business management potential. It lets you view, edit and even create Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents. It has all the standard applications you?d expect in Office Software.

For example, the word processor features footnotes and headers, supports tables and images and lets you format fonts and paragraphs. Office2 Plus is also great for presentation ? you can connect your device to an external monitor and use a simulated laser pointed.

Toshiba slips into the red as latest earnings reveal $153 million loss

Toshiba slips into the red as it records a $153 million loss

Toshiba's most recent fiscal results (the first of its 2012 financial year) show that while the company pulled in $16 billion in turnover, it slumped to a $154 million loss for the last three months. While its "social infrastructure" unit (power plants, LED light bulbs and radiation detectors) generated a $107 million profit, the consumer electronics and white-goods sectors continued to lose sales. The company attributes the loss to further restructuring costs as well as pointing an accusatory digit toward the European financial crisis and concerns about power generation capacity in Japan. Despite the gloom, the company says that it still expects to hit a target of $81 billion turnover and $3.8 billion profit before March 2013.

Investors FROWN at These Facebook Charts

If Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) were an athlete competing in the London Olympics, its event would surely be in diving. On Friday, shares of the social media juggernaut plunged more than 15 percent to reach a fresh post-IPO low of $22.28. Facebook reported its first earnings since going public in May, but the results did not impress investors.

Starting with the good, Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) increased its monthly active users 29.2 percent to 955 million in the second quarter, compared to 739 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Secondly, founder and chief executive officer Mark Zuckerberg showed up to the earnings conference call. Some may think it would be a given, but there was actually a debate on whether or not the elusive Zuckerberg would make an appearance. Remember the no-show at the Boston IPO roadshow?

Don?t Miss: Here?s More EVIDENCE Facebook and Zynga Don?t Give a Damn About Shareholders.

Zuckerberg explained, ?We ended June with 955 million monthly active users, over half of whom used Facebook on a daily basis and over half of whom used Facebook for mobile devices. We saw more people using our services at the end of June than at the end of March across all key countries, including 3 million more people in the U.S.? Mobile continues to be a strong user growth area for the company. By the end of the second quarter, 543 million people were actively using Facebook?s mobile services every month, a surge of 67 percent from last year. Mobile users are also more engaged with Facebook than people only using a desktop. ?On average, mobile users are around 20 percent more likely to use Facebook on any given day. So mobile not only gives us the potential to connect more people with our services, but it also gives us the ability to provide more value and a more deeply engaging experience,? explained Zuckerberg.

Although shares of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) initially popped after the earnings release, the gains were quickly deleted as investors poked into the numbers. Despite the growing amount of mobile users, the company has yet to boost sales growth enough to satisfy investors.

As the chart above shows, Facebook increased revenue 11.9 percent from the previous quarter. In the second quarter, the company posted revenue of $1.18 billion. It was a 32 percent jump from $895 million a year earlier, but not high enough to compensate for the IPO debacle and growth concerns. ?It has become a show-me story,? said Nabil Elsheshai, a senior equity research analyst at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, according to Bloomberg. ?The problem is deceleration, and there wasn?t anything from an outlook perspective that would indicate that is going to stop.? Facebook took the Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) approach and did not offer an earnings guidance.

Further weighing on the stock was the dismal bottom line. Facebook reported a net loss of $157 million, compared to a net gain of $240 million (11 cents per share) a year earlier. As the chart above shows, net income has been on a downward slide all year. In the first quarter, net income fell 32.1 percent from the previous quarter to $205 million. The recent quarter was impacted by rising costs and expenses, mostly due to $1.3 billion of stock-based compensation and related payroll expenses.

With Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) being the largest U.S. tech-IPO in history, there was little room for disappointment. There is a huge opportunity for monetization of users, but many investors appear unwilling to stick around for the story to play out. The recent IPO blunders of Zynga (NASDAQ:ZNGA), Groupon (NYSE:GPN) and Pandora (NYSE:P) are still burned into trading screens.

UT Human Resources Student Organization Recognized as Industry ...

KNOXVILLE ? The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management was recently named one of the outstanding chapters worldwide, according to its parent organization.

SHRM-logoThe Society for Human Resource Management recognized only 10 chapters out of 575 member schools around the world ? eight from the United States and two from Puerto Rico.

Recognition is based on the chapter?s professional development of student members, student internships, community volunteer work and contribution to the human resources management profession.

The accolade is the latest for the UT student organization. Earlier this year, a team of graduate human resource management students won the 2012 Southeast SHRM regional business plan competition and an award of $3,000.

?The Society for Human Resource Management provides amazing opportunities for our students to enhance their human resource management skills and network with human resources professionals,? said Debbie Mackey, faculty advisor for UT?s SHRM chapter. ?The learning our members receive is priceless and something that will continue with them throughout their careers.?

The UT chapter, which consists of about 50 undergraduate and graduate students majoring in human resource management, also nominated Mackey for SHRM Advisor of the Year. She?s been the chapter?s faculty advisor since it was chartered in 2002.

?It?s such an honor just to be nominated and recognized by the students,? Mackey said.

Many of us live our lives and saved by our PC, we love the photos, movies, music, contacts, literature, documents, finance, credit information, and everything you think that everything on the computer is maintained.

It is not surprising when you consider how our lives have become integrated, that is the next big step for criminals and criminal organizations, because they were able to take advantage of technological extension of our lives. Damage caused by malware and Dns Changer Virus, which is estimated at between 300 1-1000000000000 dollars, and immediately the theft of more than $ 100 billion in 2011, making it the seriousness of cyber crime debate today.

FBI and other international organizations will be small and large groups of cyber-thieves to identify serious and direct connections with organized crime syndicates and organizations. It is clear that for relatively little investment and even less risk than other forms of crime, organized crime, a successful cyber-attacks by malware and Dns Changer Virus, to start carrying millions in a relatively short time.

A look at some examples from the latest cyber threats for the last DNS changer virus successfully running for over 4 years, and brings more than $ 14 million in revenue and potential click fraud to steal millions of users of financial information through spyware installed with the Virus.

There are a few examples of e-money heist in which the individual mule around the world, where they were ordered to set up bank accounts in their name are used to pay, and then hundreds of millions collectively, this account, he will set each drop-off or transfer of the world.

Dns Changer Virus Selected Target

Buka Puasa Food from the Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar - SabahBah ...

FoodieBah and I visited our first bazaar of the Ramadan season today, driving out all the way to Lok Kawi Army Camp to experience the popular market there.

The Lok Kawi Ramadan Market is notable, because servicemen and their families from all over Malaysia make and sell speciality dishes unique to their home-towns at this bazaar.

Lok Kawi Army Camp Ramadan Bazaar

We arrive there around 3pm with the Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar already humming and the cars of plenty of other eager food shoppers lining the side of the road.

You can see the smoke from various BBQ pits cooking chicken, lamb and beef rising?as you drive up, confirming that you?ve arrived at the right location.

People clamoring for the tasty and flavourful blue rice, nasi kerabuFoodieBah heads straight for the stall she knows will be the busiest and most?sought?after ? the nasi kerabu.

Sure enough, when we get there, the stall has already attracted a crowd, and we join the 20 odd people in a rough formation, each silently willing the stall owner to make eye contact ?and notice that we want to order.

Nasi kerabu is a rice dish with origins in the states of Kelantan and Terengganu.

The distinctive blue rice, which obtains its colour from the Telang flower it is cooked with, is usually served with dried fish or fried chicken. At this stall, it?s fried chicken.

Condiments like crackers, pickles and salad accompanies the dish.

After about 10 to 12 minutes of quietly and patiently waiting for the ?production line? to finish assembling the various portions, we collect our first dish and add it to our buka puasa?collection bag.

Popular Local Ramadan Food & Drinks

Colourful tubs of drinks and trays of sweet desserts has started to line the narrow isles of low canopies in the meantime. The market covers an area roughly the size of half a football field and we start to explore.

Another stall where people were clamoring - putu piring, a sweet made of coconut and brown sugarI stumble across another busy looking stall with people?mulling in front of it (no space to queue). ??Putu Piring? says the sign above the stall.

It?s grated coconut with brown sugar, both fresh and sweet, so I think it?s meant to be a dessert. Lots of people want to get their hands on this little treat and later, after tasting it, I realise it?s quite delicious.

Explore further we come across a huge BBQ pit with perhaps 2 dozen quarter chickens flame grilling, which the owner says ? if I understood correctly ? is for his version of nasi ayam penyet. Nando?s comes to mind.

Murtabak - a savoury type of pancake filled with veggies and or meatWe also discover multiple stalls selling murtabak, a type of?savory, veggie-or-meat filled pancake.

Because there?s a lot of?competition for this particular food, the stall owners each have a rhyme or catch phrase, which they almost sing to attract attention.

It gives the market a lively atmosphere and makes people smile, even though the heat under the canopies wants to melt that smile right off.

By the time we make it back to the centre of the market near the entrance, we?re well hot and stop to try a few of the colourful drinks.

Lots of food, but nobody?s eating

Most of the stall owners are Muslim, so in-spite of all the food, they are not eating. Therefore, non-Muslim visitors to the market generally do not consume the food they buy on the spot, but instead take it elsewhere to eat.

But, assures the Muslim stall owner that sells us the drinks, drinking for non-Muslims wouldn?t be considered offensive. I duly buy and drink two colourful drinks ? a very pink Air Bandung and a very green?Katira, that tastes like chendol ? if ever you?ve had that.

Drinks at the Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar in all the colours of the rainbowThey are both sweet and, in the heat, go down well.

By now the market has swelled with visitors and the narrow isles between the canopies are heating up and getting hard to navigate. ?Our buka puasa bag is brimming with food for later, so we decide to call it a day.

The Lok Kawi Ramadan Bazaar is about 15km outside of Kota Kinabalu and, depending on traffic, will take about 30 minutes by taxi and should cost around RM40.

It?s well worth a visit for tourists and a great opportunity to sample traditional and modern Mulsim fare during the month of Ramadan.

Melting Ice Floods Greenland River, Satellite Photo Shows

Melting ice in Greenland has swelled the island's rivers with water. A NASA satellite snapped a photo of meltwater overflowing the banks of the Watson River near Kangerlussuaq, a key air transportation hub, on July 12.

Two weeks later, however, river levels have receded somewhat, according to a release from the NASA Earth Observatory.

"Water rises every year, but I've never before observed it at this level of discharge," said Richard Forster, a University of Utah researcher who has done extensive fieldwork in Greenland, in a statement. "It was also about two weeks prior to the normal seasonal peak."

The town, known as Kanger, hosts one of the island's busiest commercial airports and is a frequent departure point for scientific research flights. It lies about 74 miles (125 kilometers) from the sea.

The water most likely came from melting of the ice sheet ? rather than an ice-dammed lake bursting or glacial lake drainage ? as the high discharge was maintained for so long, Forster said.

The flooding follows reports that 97 percent of Greenland's ice sheets thawed on the surface, according to satellite measurements. Only four days before, ?just 40 percent of the surface ice layer was thawing.

This year's ice melt is well above average: About half of Greenland's surface ice tends to melt every summer, with the meltwater at higher elevations quickly refreezing in place and the coastal meltwater either pooling on top of the ice or draining into the sea. [Giant Ice: Photos of Greenland's Glaciers]

The massive melt may have been caused by a ridge or dome of warm air hovering over Greenland.

Signs of ice melt were even found around Summit Station in central Greenland, which at 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) above sea level is near to the highest point on the ice sheet.

The melting characteristics of such a huge ice sheet ? spanning 656,000 square miles (1.7 million square kilometers) ? is important for various reasons, particularly its potential effect on sea levels. If melted completely, the Greenland ice sheet could contribute 23 feet (7 meters) to global sea-level rise, according to a 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the international body charged with assessing climate change.

Whether or not this recent massive melt will affect the overall ice loss this summer, and as such bump up sea level, is still an open question.

In other Greenland-melting news, a massive iceberg that recently broke away from one of Greenland's largest glaciers is making its way downstream and toward the open ocean, as shown by a new satellite photo.

The drifting island of ice split from the Petermann Glacier's ice shelf ? the front end of a glacier, which hangs off the land and floats on the ocean.

Thenewly birthed berg is estimated to be about 46 square miles (120 square kilometers), and finally broke away from the floating tongue of ice on Monday, July 16.

Turf painting spreads as drought ravages lawns

When this summer's drought turned her prized lawn brown, Terri LoPrimo fought back, but not with sprinklers: She had it painted green, making her suddenly lush-appearing yard the envy of her neighborhood.

The Staten Island, N.Y., resident and her husband, Ronnie, hired a local entrepreneur to spruce up their yard by spraying it with a deep-green organic dye. By Monday, the couple's property was aglow with newly green blades of grass and no watering needed to sustain it.

"It looks just like a spring lawn, the way it looks after a rain. It's really gorgeous," said LoPrimo, a 62-year-old retiree.

With two-thirds of the nation covered by a drought that stretches from coast to coast, residents and businesses in normally well-watered areas are catching on to the lawn-painting practice employed for years in the West and Southwest to give luster to faded turf.

LoPrimo paid $125 to green up her roughly 830-square-foot lawn. She said it was worth every penny to keep her home of 33 years graced by an attractive yard.

Neighbors and friends have complimented the LoPrimos on their lawn's appearance, and she said one envious friend asked for the number of their contractor, Joe Perazzo.

Perazzo, who teaches physical education at Brooklyn's High School of Sports Management, began painting lawns during his summer break three years ago. His Staten Island company, Grass Is Greener Lawn Painting, has touched up close to 20 lawns this summer, making it his best year to date.

"I'm booked solid for next week. If you look around, most of the lawns need some TLC," Perazzo said.

He charges 15 cents per square foot to spray on a non-toxic, environmentally friendly turf dye that he said is commonly used on golf courses and athletic fields to give them a lusher appearance.

Perazzo said the dyed lawns will hold their verdant look for a few months, in some cases up to five months.

"It's a night-and-day difference," he said. "People are amazed by how natural it looks."

Kansas City, Mo.-based Missouri Turf Paint Inc. has been selling latex turf paints for more than 40 years. Company president Jon Graves said his primary customers are golf courses looking to keep their greens attractive and athletic fields "getting ready for show time."

But he said he's seen a slight increase this year in calls from people interested in either greening up residential lawns or wanting to get into the lawn-painting business.

"We've had calls primarily from people saying 'Hey I think I'd like to do this for a business,' but we've also had them about houses in foreclosure, homes they want to look a little bit better," for potential buyers, he said.

In the frequently parched Phoenix area, Brian Howland has been painting lawns for about five years as a side business to his full-time job with a sign- and banner-making company.

Howland said he started Arizona Lawn Painting after the foreclosure crisis left scores of Phoenix-area homes empty and their lawns neglected. He charges $200 for up to 3,000 square feet, and more if there are numerous lawn features to paint around.

Some of his customers have been residents fearful that their homeowners' associations will penalize them for letting their lawns fade.

"Usually it's people who don't feel like messing with their yard or it's a rental or a foreclosure or a sale ? something where before everything gets going they want it to look nice," he said.

A newer entrant into the lawn-painting business is Tim Birdwell, whose Imperial Painting normally paints Indianapolis-area homes and commercial properties. But this month, Birdwell painted his own desiccated lawn.

His first paying customer was a Meineke muffler shop on the south side of Indianapolis, which, like most of Indiana, is in the midst of an extreme drought.

Last Friday, two of Birdwell's workers sprayed the long strip of brown grass in front of the store with latex paint, creating an oasis of green in a suburban strip mall filled with faded grass.

Store manager Damon Riggles said Birdwell's price for the paint job ? about $600 ? was worth it because the vibrant-looking grass has attracted customers.

"It looks great," Riggles said. "It gave us some curb appeal and definitely got us some new customers' attention. And that's what we were hoping for."

kissenger robot transmits kisses for long distance relationships

'kissenger' transmits kisses between two individuals separated by long distances

developed by dr. hooman samani, founder of the singapore-based robotics research group lovotics, 'kissenger' ('kiss messenger') is a system
designed to augment interaction between two individuals-- whether friends, family members, or partners-- across long distances.

designboom has gotten in touch with samani to check in about the project, following a recent demo at the DIS 2012 ('designing interactive systems')
conference. 'kissinger' is currently in its fifth iteration ('version 2.0'), in which it adopts the shape of a small and simple oblong-shaped
creature; previous versions include a faceless but lipped egg-shaped figure followed by a rotund cartoon character with large lips. in all designs,
the front lip has force sensitive resistors placed just below the outer surface. when kissed, data regarding the difference in pressure at different
points is read and transmitted wirelessly to the receiving 'kissenger' device, where the motorized actuators reproduce the kiss.
all internal electronics are hidden within the unit.

whether used on the forehead, cheek, or lips, the device transfers the feeling of a kiss given to one unit, to another, enabling the conveyance
of greetings, romance, and well wishes. the latest model transmits kisses over the internet in realtime via a server, with each 'kissenger' robot
connected to the computer via USB port. samani notes in the paper just presented at DIS 2012 that the potential feature of asynchronous kissing
(the device storing a kiss that could be 'read' at a later time) raises significant additional ethical questions.

Consumer 101: Navigating the Health Insurance Maze | Consumer ...

I?ve been seeing the same doctor, going to the same facility, and receiving the same treatment for the same condition for two years. Every six weeks I have medication infused over a three hour period for an autoimmune disease I was diagnosed with in 2009. These infusions are what keep me free from serious illness and out of the hospital.

While this may sound dramatic, it?s a pretty common circumstance. According to the CDC, over 133 million Americans live with at least one chronic illness?one out of every two adults?that requires regular medical treatment. But even after going to the same doctor, visiting the same facility, and receiving the same care for two solid years, I still have to fight with my insurance company over billing issues and terminology every six weeks.

Wrestling with health insurance is stressful. With arguing over ?tier two providers? and ?in-network service? and knowing that every six weeks an error could derail my treatment, in many ways it feels like I?ve lost control over my own health. I will be chronically ill for the rest of my life, but I?ve taken the steps to navigate the insurance maze to avoid another nightmare of snafus.

The Horror Story

About six months ago the time came for my next infusion, so I swung into action as usual. I called the infusion facility to confirm my appointment and was informed that my insurance company was refusing to pay for the next treatment. It bears mentioning that the medication I receive?something that is used to treat several illnesses?costs slightly more than a semester at Princeton University. I was told that I could pay for the infusion out of pocket, which was not possible. With only 72 hours until I needed my medication, my only option was to get on the phone with the insurance company.

This is not exactly easy. Because the insurance company representatives are only available during regular business hours, I had to make these calls from work. I sat in my office common area on the phone with different representatives trying to figure out what the story was. After three days of speaking with my insurance company, things were still not resolved in time for my appointment. I did not receive my infusion that week. I can go without my infusion for an extra week or even two, but there is always the chance that I?ll get seriously sick because of it.

It took 17 days without medication, 20 hours of phone calls, and a mental imprint of the symphony version of Celine Dion?s My Heart Will Go On to resolve the issue.

There was a clerical error. Someone from the insurance company had wrongly labeled my infusion facility as an ?out of network?, ?tier three? provider when it is actually an ?in network?, ?tier two? provider. It took two weeks to locate this glitch through the maze of paperwork in my file. The representative I was talking to at the time said, ?oh, here, lemme fix that.? I heard a few clicks on a keyboard. ?There you go, Ms. Sanders.?

There I go indeed.

While I wouldn?t necessarily consider myself the ?average? health insurer, this situation would sound familiar to millions of consumers. The real problem is that there is no ?average? health insurance user. We all have different health needs, which means we all have unique health insurance needs. The best way to stay on top of your health and to use your health insurance to the best of its ability is to educate yourself and follow some basic guidelines.

The Consumer?s Guide to Health Insurance
Sifting through health insurance jargon and practices can be challenging for the everyday consumer. Until we fall ill or a billing issue occurs, health insurance benefits and terms aren?t things we really think about. As Vice President of Consumer Marketing for GoHealth, a consumer-focused online health insurance platform, Michael Mahoney has extensive knowledge of health insurance coverage. Mahoney explained that ?consumers should understand exactly what [a] plan covers and includes? prior to selecting it. The research into what specific terms mean and what specific options are available to you should start before you?ve officially chosen a coverage provider.

Mahoney stressed the importance of knowing the ?copayment amount, premium, deductible, physician network, coinsurance rates, benefit levels, and prescription costs? of the plan you are considering. Specifically, Mahoney suggested paying ?extra attention to the premium and the deductible when comparing health plans? because ?simply going with the plan with the lowest premium and highest deductible may not be the best game plan for every consumer.? So, in an effort to better understand the troubles I faced with my insurance coverage six months ago and to help guide others in the process, I?ve researched some specific insurance terms.

Terms to Know

  • Premium: A premium is the amount of money you pay in return for your insurance coverage. This payment is typically made as one full payment or through several installments during the duration of a policy agreement.
  • Deductible: A deductible is the fixed dollar amount you agree to pay for your health needs before your insurer starts to make payments for covered medical services. This dollar amount will vary depending on the insurance plan you choose and there can be separate deductibles for specific services (hospitalizations, surgeries, etc.).
  • Copayment: The copayment is the fixed amount you pay when a medical service is received. This cost is shared by the insurer and the insured. You pay an amount upfront for a medical service and your insurer pays the remaining amount which is billed by the facility at a later date. This copayment amount varies among insurance plan agreements and is defined in the plan when an agreement is made.
  • Physician Network: The physician network or ?in network providers? are the physicians and facilities that are covered by your insurance company. This network of doctors and hospitals is contracted with your insurance company to provide services to you at a discounted rate. The networks will vary among insurance companies and plans. If you receive services from a physician or facility that is not within your insurance?s physician network, that service is considered ?out of network? and will cost more.

While these are perhaps the most important terms a consumer needs to know, there are numerous other phrases involved with health insurance that you should educate yourself on. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defines key concepts for both consumers and health care companies and is a good guide for understanding coverage.

On Monday, I?ll explore tools and tips that can help you manage your health benefits.

Saudi woman to compete without hijab in Olympics

One of the first two female athletes ever to compete from Saudi Arabia in the Olympics will not wear a headscarf in the judo competition, says judo federation chief. What will Saudi Arabians say?

By Michael Holden,?Reuters / July 26, 2012

Two police officers patrol at St. Pancras Station in London, below the Olympic symbol. The colors of the five rings - blue, yellow, black, green, and red - on the white field represent international unity because they draw on the colors of all flags of the world, at least at the time it was designed in 1912.

Saudi Arabia's female judo competitor will fight at the London Olympics "without a hijab", or Islamic headscarf, the sport's chief said on Thursday.

Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani, one of the first two female athletes sent to the Olympics by the conservative Muslim kingdom, is due to compete in the women's heavyweight tournament next Friday.

"She will fight according to the principle and spirit of judo, so without a hijab," International Judo Federation president Marius Vizer said.

The decision is likely to cause controversy in Saudi Arabia, where female participation in sports has long been a controversial issue. Powerful clerics denounce women for exercising, saying it goes against their natural role.

A Saudi official had told Reuters earlier this month they expected that the women would have to obey the dress code of Islamic law. He did not elaborate, but other conservative Muslim countries have interpreted this to mean a headscarf, long sleeves and long pants.

Shaherkani, who will compete in the 78-kg category in judo, and teenage 800 metre runner Sarah Attar were the first Saudi women allowed to take part in the Olympics after talks between the International Olympic Committee and the country.

The decision to allow female Saudi athletes to compete at London was praised by IOC President Jacques Rogge at the time.
"This is very positive news and we will be delighted to welcome these two athletes in London in a few weeks time," Rogge said in a statement in early July.

"The IOC has been striving to ensure a greater gender balance at the Olympic Games, and (today's) news can be seen as an encouraging evolution."

Saudi Arabia was one of three countries, alongside Brunei and Qatar, never to have sent female athletes to the Olympics but the latter two confirmed earlier this year that their delegations would include women. (Editing by Ossian Shine and Sonya Hepinstall)

Tanner Hendrickson and Michael Powell qualify for Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco quarter-finals

Hawaii?s Tanner Hendrickson and America?s Michael Powell made their way into the quarter-final stages at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after walking away with top honours from their respective Round 5 (Round of 16) heats that took place at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Saturday, July 21.

America?s Colin Moran and Hawaii?s Gavin Gillette were able to keep themselves alive in contention for the event title as well by securing runner-up position in their respective heats, which proved sufficient to take them through into the next stage of the event.

The swell had seen significant improvement on the latest day of the competition, with the waves on offer lying with a range of four-to-six feet. The off-shore conditions made it pretty hard for the up-and-coming surfers to post big scores on the score-board.

The first heat pitted Hendrickson against his compatriot Diego Cadena, America?s Moran and his fellow countryperson Dane Anderson in a four-man battle for a spot in the quarter-finals.

The 20-year-old Haiku-based Hendrickson put on an impressive performance during the course of the battle and eventually managed to reach a two-wave total of 11.60 points, which sealed the fate of the bout in his favour.

?I?m so stoked to make it to the man-on-man Quarters,? Hendrickson said. ?With the man-on-man heats, I?m definitely going to try and be more patient and try and sit away from the other competitor and find my own peaks.?

Moran finished in second place with a heat-total of 8.24 points to move through into the next stage of the competition as well, whereas Cadena and Anderson rounded out the bottom-two position with a heat-total of 8.10 and 7.57 points respectively.

The next heat saw the 24-year-old Wrightsville Beach-based Powell clinch the win over his compatriot Jeffrey Lukasik, Hawaii?s Gillette and Mexico?s Jose Trujillo through a heat-total of 11.10 points.

?I?m very excited to make it to the Quarters,? Powell said. ?The best I had ever done was to make it to the Round of 64 before this event, so I guess I?m having a lot of good luck because the conditions are extremely challenging. I?m happy to be in the next round.?

Gillette finished in runner-up position with a two-wave total of 6.47 points, which turned out to be enough to take him through into the next round.

Trujillo finished in third place with a heat-total of 6.16 points, while Lukasik rounded out the bottom-position with a heat-total of 5.47 points. Both the surfers were forced to make a premature exit from the competition as a result.

O'Connor Faults Supreme Court Critics with a 'Lack of ...

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor called the heated criticism of the Court over the recent decisions involving the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act "unfortunate," telling a Senate committee today?that it shows a need for more civics education.

O'Connor testified that comments labeling Chief Justice John Roberts a "traitor" or that he betrayed former president George W. Bush "demonstrate only too well the lack of understanding some of our citizens have about the role of the judicial branch."

O'Connor appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee to discuss how to ensure judicial independence through education, speaking about her support of iCivics, a nonprofit group she founded to teach students through free games about how government works and how they can become involved.

Oconnor_06She advocated again today for taking politics out of the judicial branch, and saying she hoped states that hold elections for judges would change to an appointment model like the federal system. The result of judicial elections "has been the need for candidates to raise money for their election campaigns and I think that has a corrupting influence on the selection of judges."

O'Connor has been criticized since retiring from the Court?by some proponents of state judicial elections and in the editorial pages of the Wall Street Journal for her involvement in the issue. This included her support of changes to the judge-selection laws in Michigan and Iowa.

And this isn't the first time O'Connor has talked about what she calls the need for iCivics. In early 2011, she said?during an appearance at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Arizona State University in Phoenix that,?"People simply don't know today how their government works. They don't know the difference between federal and state courts. We live in a very uneducated age."

At the Senate hearing, Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) joined O'Connor in criticizing the attacks on Roberts. "These types of attacks reveal the misguided notion that justices and judges owe some allegiance to the president who appointed them or to a political party," Leahy said.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the committee's ranking minority member, said that the leading reason for "the so-called attack on judicial independence" are the judges' actions. "We hear that if only our citizens properly understood the role of the courts, unprecedented attacks on judicial rulings would vanish," Grassley said. "This view is at odds with both current reality and the history of our country."

Grassley pointed out that many Americans now disapprove of the Supreme Court's performance, and the healthcare decision did not improve its popularity. He cited a news account that showed Americans believe the decision was based mainly on the justices' personal or political views, and only about 30 percent of Americans say the decision was made mainly on legal analysis.

When asked about the cause of that decline in public's approval, O'Connor said: "I wish I knew."

She speculated the Bush v. Gore decision was a tipping point. "It is conceivable because that was a very tense case that involved the holdovers from a very close election," O'Connor said.

Grassley was the first to mention he favored allowing cameras in the Supreme Court. When O'Connor asked to speak about it, Grassley quipped that she should "Only speak if you speak in favor of it."

"Then I better keep my mouth shut," O'Connor said.

But later, O'Connor opened up on the topic, saying there are justices "at present who are not at all comfortable" with the cameras and that every word spoken in the court is publicly available to read later that day.

"It's not that there is a lack of ability to know what's going on. It's there," O'Connor said. "It's just, do we have to have it on the camera and on the television, or do we have to read it? I guess it boils down to that. I'm a reader, so don't ask me."

Kramer vs. Kramer vs. Kramer

Not really. State laws do not provide for polygamous divorce, and, because most American polygamists live in insular religious communities, few cases addressing this issue have reached the courts. Judges have a few options. They can treat separating polygamists as unmarried cohabitants rather than spouses. (Common law marriage wouldn?t be an option, because it?s prohibited when one or more partner is already married.) That rules out alimony, but palimony?a division of the assets that a couple shared during their nonmarriage?might be available. It?s tricky to formulate a fair distribution in such cases, though, because the wives who remain in the marriage also have claims to the property. Alternatively, the judge could refuse to grant palimony altogether?in effect, treating the couple as less than cohabitants?to avoid legitimizing the illegal polygamous relationship.

Tough questions after Beijing rain storm kills 37

BEIJING (AP) ? As China's flood-ravaged capital dealt with the aftermath of the heaviest rain in six decades Monday, including the deaths of 37 people, questions were being raised about whether the city's push for modernization came at the expense of basic infrastructure such as drainage networks.

Rescuers were still searching buildings that collapsed during Saturday night's torrential downpour and some roads that were covered in waist-deep water remained closed. The city government said as of Sunday night, 25 people had drowned, six were killed when houses collapsed, one was hit by lightning and five were electrocuted by fallen power lines.

Beijing residents shared photos online of submerged cars stranded on flooded streets, city buses with water up to commuters' knees and cascades of water rushing down the steps of overpasses.

The official China Daily newspaper reported that 60,000 people had been evacuated from their homes and damages from the storm had reached at least 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion).

Although the worst-hit areas were in rural hilly outskirts of the city, the scale of the disaster was a major embarrassment for Beijing, the showcase capital of China where things like this are not supposed to happen.

The city has seen tens of billions of dollars poured into its modernization, adding iconic venues for the 2008 Olympics, the world's second-largest airport, new subway lines and dazzling skyscrapers ? all while basics like water drainage were apparently neglected.

Many were left wondering how badly prepared other less-prosperous parts of China must be.

"If so much chaos can be triggered in Beijing, the capital of the nation, problems in urban infrastructure of many other places can only be worse," said a commentary in Monday's state-run Global Times newspaper. "In terms of drainage technology, China is decades behind developed societies."

There was similar criticism on the popular microblog service, Sina Weibo.

"This is China's capital of Beijing. Look what happens when it's hit by a rainstorm," wrote Weibo user Wen Hui. "The drainage systems of Rome that were built 2,500 years ago are still in use and you can drive a car through them. Can a dog get through Beijing's drainage tunnels?"

The criticism mirrors some of that seen after a high-speed train crash in Wenzhou in southeastern China a year ago Monday. That turned into a public-relations nightmare for the government and led many to question the quality of infrastructure in the country and the government's transparency on disasters.

Some pointed out that Saturday's deluge was historic in nature, with the Global Times noting it was the heaviest rainstorm in the capital in 61 years.

"In just in one day, it rained as much as it normally rains in six months in Beijing," said Zhang Junfeng, a senior engineer from the Ministry of Transport who runs weekend tours of Beijing reservoirs and gives lectures on water conservancy. "No drainage system can withstand rains this big."

The capital's skies were clear Monday, with traffic largely back to normal and the city's main airport operating normally after hundreds of flights were canceled or delayed over the weekend. But hard hit areas were still feeling the effects.

In Qinglonghu, a village about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from downtown Beijing where many migrant workers from surrounding provinces have settled, at least two dozen single-story brick homes were flooded. Local residents said Monday they were terrified to go back into their homes for fear they would collapse. They said they had no drinking water or food and had yet to get any assistance from local officials.

At least three people from the village were believed killed, locals said, including a man crushed by a falling power line and a woman and her baby daughter who were washed away.

"We couldn't save them," said 50-year-old Wang Lianfeng, a villager who had taken shelter on a roof when she saw the woman and her 8-month-old girl swept away. Wang sobbed as she described being unable to reach them. She said the body of the girl was found but the mother is still missing.

Other areas around Qinglonghu appeared minimally affected. Piles of dirt from a large construction site appeared to have formed a dam that kept the downpour from draining into a nearby river.

The village is in Fangshan district, the worst hit area of the city, which received 460 millimeters (18.4 inches) of rain on Saturday.

Heavy rain also proved deadly elsewhere in the country. Six people were killed by landslides in Sichuan province in the west, Xinhua said, citing disaster officials. Four people died in Shanxi province in the north when their truck was swept away by a rain-swollen river. At least eight people died and 17 were missing after heavy rains hit in neighboring Shaanxi province.

China suffers flooding and dozens of storm-related deaths every summer during its rainy season, but such a heavy downpour in relatively dry Beijing is unusual.
