Lobster glut drives price per pound lower than bologna
This year soft-shell?lobsters?began showing up in abundance in fishermen's traps weeks earlier than normal.

Retailers have been selling small soft-shell?lobsters?in the Portland area for an unusually low $3.79 to $4.99 a pound. At those prices,?lobsters?have been selling for less than the per-pound price of bologna at many supermarket deli counters.
Zain Nemazie, of Austin, Texas, was expecting low?lobster?prices ? but not this low ? while on vacation in Maine with his family.
"This is as good as it gets," Nemazie said late last week after paying $4.59 a pound for large 1 1/2-poundlobsters?at a seafood shop on Portland's waterfront. "We're from Texas, where we'd be paying at least $12 a pound."
At Docks Seafood in South Portland, owner Bob Coppersmith said customers were eating up the low prices, including a deal where he was selling five small live?lobsters?for $25. He later dropped it to five for $24.
"One gentleman came in and said, 'So I get five?lobsters?for $25. What's the catch?'" Coppersmith said. "I said there's no catch. He said, 'You're going to put five?lobsters?in a bag and not weigh them and give me them to me for 25 bucks?' He just couldn't believe it."
The Fourth of July represents the unofficial start to Maine's tourist season, when out-of-state visitors begin arriving in earnest.
Typically, Independence Day also is when Maine's?lobster?catch begins picking up as?lobsters?begin shedding their hard shells in favor of new soft shells. Soft-shell?lobsters?have less meat than hard-shell ones, but they are easier to crack open ? it can be done by hand, no claw cracker needed ? and sell for a lower price.
This year, though, soft-shell?lobsters?began showing up in abundance in fishermen's traps weeks earlier than normal.
Most of those?lobsters?usually go to Canadian processors. But the processors haven't been able to handle the Maine catch because Canadian lobstermen had such strong catches during their spring season, resulting in a backlog, said Neal Workman, head of The Fisheries Exchange, a Biddeford company that tracks prices, catches and other market information for the?lobster?industry.
Supply right now far exceeds demand, resulting in a "perfect storm" for the industry, he said.
"Things are plugged up," Workman said.
Virtually all soft-shell?lobsters?are sold to processors or on the local market, because they're too fragile to ship long distances. The?lobsters?sold at retailers outside of New England are most often hard-shell?lobsters, which command a premium price and are hardy enough to be shipped long distances.
For now, the excess supply in Maine has driven retail prices to under $4 a pound for the smallest of the soft-shell?lobsters. Larger?lobsters, and those that still have hard shells, are more expensive.
While consumers may be smiling, lobstermen are smarting because of the low prices ? between $2.50 and $3 a pound ? they're getting for their catches.
The fishing season is young and lobstermen are hopeful prices soon will rebound to their normal levels, said Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen's Association.
"The Fourth of July is a big boom in demand for us," she said. "We're going to see some?lobsters?move through the system, so there's hope that we'll see a balancing in the market once we get through the holiday demand and get back on track for a typical season.
"But there's definitely a lot of angst among harvesters."
With Independence Day around the corner, Pete McAleney of New Meadows?Lobster, a?lobster?dealer in Portland, was using the low prices as a marketing opportunity.
"To heck with hot dogs and hamburgers, eat a?lobster," McAleney said. "They're very affordable."

Graham Nash has been playing with Crosby, Stills and Nash since 1968. Although he and his at-the-time new band mates ? Crosby, a former member of the Byrds; Stills of Buffalo Springfield, and Nash of the Hollies ? would become one of the biggest radio and concert sensations of the late 1960s and 1970s through today, the trio ? which would also work with Neil Young for many projects ? wasn?t quite ready for its first concert:?
The Atlantic City Pop Festival, held at the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, just before Woodstock in August 1969.?
?We didn?t play it,? says Nash, on a tour stop with CSN in Providence, Rhode Island. (The band is on the road through October and returns to the Borgata in Atlantic City on Saturday, June 30.)?
Although CSN was to debut live at the A.C. Pop Fest, with its name listed on the festival?s official posters and T-shirts, etc., Nash doesn?t quite remember the circumstances. ?
?I?m not sure to be honest,? he says. ?I?ve been asked this question twice within the last month. ? I believe that we needed more practice. Don?t forget Woodstock was only the second gig we ever played together live. ?
?I think we might have needed more rehearsal or something. Something was going on and we didn?t play that Atlantic City [date, but] there were people who swore they saw us there!??
Aside from singing and playing on such classic tunes as ?Almost Cut My Hair,? ?Teach Your Children,? ?Our House? and ?Chicago,? Nash has been interested in art and photography for decades. ?
Although he has had exhibits of his photography in the past, his paintings ? mainly acrylics ? are being unveiled for the first time beginning this Thursday (June 28) in Stone Harbor.?
While CSN plays the Borgata, Nash?s exhibit ?The Art of Graham Nash? will be on display at Ocean Galleries (9618 Third Ave., Stone Harbor) through Sept. 30. ?
However, on July 1, Nash will be at the gallery in person for a reception between 7-10pm where he will sign purchased art.?
?This exhibit has never been seen before,? says Nash. ?These paintings. I?ve been working on this [exhibit] for about a year and a half now.?
?This whole experience is fresh. It was amazing to me that when the gallery owners came out to my house in Los Angeles and saw my work it was their response that got me excited because, I mean, they?re supposed to know what they?re doing ? they?ve had an art gallery for a couple decades now and they?re this excited! It was shocking to me.? ?
So Nash decided to share his intriguing imagery with the world.?
?Why not let other people see them?? Nash says. ?You know? It?s brand new to me and it?s going to be exciting.??
Exciting for southern New Jersey folks as well, as the Ocean Galleries exhibit is the world premiere of Nash?s paintings of images and people such as Neil Young. ?
Nash says he is already working on another exhibit of different works.?
?I?ve done another exhibit of very serious work that I?ve been doing,? says Nash. ?
?Almost brutal images of things that disturb me. ... It?s hard to say what they are. They are a combination of painting and photographs and images that I made collages of ? interesting work. And there will only be seven pieces in the entire exhibit. Six of them will be four-feet-square and one image will be four-feet-high by 12-feet long.??
Aside from the images that will be on display at Ocean Galleries this summer, Nash?s Web site shows more than 40 photographs the 70-year-old multi-faceted artist has taken over the years.?
?I?ve been a photographer longer than I?ve been a musician,? says Nash. ?The first portrait that I ever took where I thought I had something was of my mother when I was 11.??

?Oh, yes I was there. That?s Leon Russell there behind him. I was there to purely watch George pull off a piece of wonderfulness. It was a great, great concert.??

Many Humanists and Scientists argue that our technology and civilization is out pacing evolution by a huge margin. They point to our tribalistic, band and small group human history that we survived with for hundreds of thousands of years is no longer anything similar to our modern societies. Indeed to argue against this fact would be futile as it is so. However we seem to for the most part done very well as out human populations swells around the planet.
Humanists will ask and one recently did; ?Doesn?t it make more sense to be who we are and develop our true, and in my view powerful abilities (i.e. to communicate with each other through the energy fields that connect us without technology, to create with our minds a reality that is truly self sustaining, to connect with each other and rid the entire human species of the negative beliefs that are undermining us all etc?)??
Well indeed he sure has brought up a huge question worthy of discussion. However let me take a crack at this question as I answer in the negative to his assumptions;
?NO. Because why should you choose one or the other, why not both. Have the capability and develop lost skills, while simultaneously using our brains to invent better technologies to improve on the human design. We do not have time for evolution to take its sweet time. You know you are talking about talking the species back to the stoneage, yet who would that really serve. We need sewer treatment plants, fresh water and energy for things. Not that they are totally necessary, but they have certainly improved life from other civilization of the last let?s say 5000 years anyway. Perhaps ancient cultures die previously have great advances and may have been extremely well adapted civilizations without all this fluff. Yet who is to say that was better and why should we make that decision for all humanity, as humanity has spoken and voted with their consumer dollar and well, they want all this stuff.?
As far as the observations of human civilizations in the present period and the dummying down of the population base; well now that they cannot function without all these modern technologies, they very much need it and cannot feel fulfilled without out it. Myself, well I could go without many of the modern amenities.
Humans need a challenge and advancement and forward progression of the species does provide that challenge. After all; why does someone climb a mountain? It is there and it is a challenge. Many including myself like challenges, creating stuff and inventing things, so why not? Using technology to help mankind along in his journey to create better, strong and better civilizations is wise. And as mankind reaches a place of heaven on Earth, with more leisure time and the Utopia we desire, who is anyone to say that technology is an evil to the human race? Think on that.
