Police shoot 7 'terrorists' in China's Muslim west (AP)

BEIJING ? Police in China's restive Central Asia border area fatally shot seven members of a Muslim ethnic group in what officials said Thursday was an attempt to end a kidnapping by terrorists, but what a rights group said was excessive force.

Accounts from officials and government websites said police officers opened fire after they encountered resistance in a Wednesday night raid on a mountain hideout outside Hotan city to free two men kidnapped by "a violent terrorist group."

Aside from the seven dead, four people were injured and another four arrested, and while police freed the two hostages, one officer was killed and another injured, said an account on the official website of Xinjiang, the region where the incident took place. A spokeswoman for the Xinjiang government confirmed the account and identified the kidnappers and their hostages as Uighurs, the indigenous, mainly Muslim ethnic group.

"They were holding weapons, and they injured the local police," said the spokeswoman, Hou Hanmin.

Long-simmering resentment among Uighurs over rule by China's Han majority and influxes of Chinese migrants into Xinjiang has sporadically erupted into violence. Separatist sentiment is rife, with some Uighurs advocating armed rebellion. A smaller fringe has been radicalized by militant calls for Muslim holy war and has been found in training camps across the border in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

China has responded to the sporadic violence by increasing the police presence, conducting raids and at times restricting the practice of Islam ? moves that have further alienated many Uighurs and ratcheted up tensions.

Wednesday's raid in Hotan "was an excuse for more suppression," said Dilxat Raxit, a spokesman for the German-based World Uyghur Congress. Dilxat said that Uighurs in the area reached by phone gave unverified accounts of a higher death toll and told him that police were confiscating mobile phones to prevent calls, messages and photos from getting out.

"The Uighurs cannot get used to Chinese in their homeland," said Dilxat.

Whenever conflict arises, he said, Chinese authorities resort to overwhelming force. "This is the way it is," he said. "As soon as Uighurs resist, the Chinese police turn to violent methods."

The Hotan area has been on the front lines of separatist clashes for more than a decade. In July, a group of Uighurs stormed a police station and took four hostages, killing four; police killed 14 Uighurs to end the takeover.

China initially blamed that attack on Uighur terrorists trained overseas, and though the government frequently makes that accusation whenever violence erupts in Xinjiang, it has seldom provided evidence to back up the claims of organized terrorism.

Italy short-term debt costs halve at auction (Reuters)

MILAN (Reuters) ? Italian short-term debt costs halved at auction on Wednesday as a new package of budget austerity and an injection of cheap long-term money from the European Central Bank won Rome some respite in thin year-end markets.

Analysts warned market tensions could easily reignite and pointed to a new test on Thursday when Italy will sell up to 8.5 billion euros ($11.1 bln) of longer-term bonds, including three- and ten-year paper.

But the average rate of 3.25 percent at which Italy sold 9 billion euros of six-month BOT bills was down from a euro lifetime record of 6.50 percent just a month earlier.

"Many things have changed from a month ago: the government has won a confidence vote on its austerity package and the ECB has acted to help banks," an Italian bill trader said.

"This doesn't mean we can rule out further problematic auctions. Markets are easily unnerved."

Demand for bills totaled 1.69 times the amount on offer, a clear improvement versus a bid-to-cover ratio of around 1.5 at the end of November.

This is the first Italian debt sale since the ECB provided 490 billion euros in cheap three-year loans to euro zone banks on December 21 in an unprecedented move aimed at easing credit strains.

Expectations of a strong take-up at the ECB's tender contributed to an equally dramatic fall in Spanish short-term borrowing costs this month.

Madrid's six-month debt costs more than halved to 2.4 percent at an auction on the eve of the ECB's tender.

However, doubts about how much of the cheap three-year funds would find their way into troubled government bonds weighed on Italian and Spanish yields in the following sessions.

Italy's ten-year yields briefly climbed back above 7 percent this week, pushing the premium over the equivalent German benchmark above 500 basis points.

On Wednesday, the yield stood at 6.8 percent, giving a premium of 489 basis points over Germany.

Credit Agricole strategist Peter Chatwell said the results bode well for the auction of three-year bonds on Thursday but he was less sure about the 10-year sale - typically a better measure of underlying interest from external investors.

"Demand for short term paper is good. It remains to be seen whether this extends to the longer maturities," he said.

Italy paid a euro lifetime record high yield of 7.56 percent to sell ten-year bonds at the end of November.

TESTING START

Italy can count on key support from retail domestic investors at short-term sales but longer-term bonds remain more challenging. With more than 91 billion euros of bonds maturing in the first four months of 2012, Rome faces a crucial test early next year.

In a push to regain market confidence, in the run-up to Christmas Italy's parliament gave the final seal to an emergency austerity budget rushed through by a new technocrat government.

Market attention will now turn to the reform agenda of Prime Minister Mario Monti who has promised to tackle Italy's chronic low-growth problems -- after inaction by former PM Silvio Berlusconi pushed the country to the brink of financial disaster.

Monti has convened a cabinet meeting on Wednesday to outline his plans and he could provide some indications to investors in his traditional year-end press conference on Thursday.

Analysts expect Monti's 33 billion euro austerity package to further depress Italy's weak internal demand, making government's efforts to revive growth through a series of long-delayed liberalizations even more crucial.

Italy also sold on Wednesday 1.7 billion euros of 24-month, zero-coupon CTZ bonds at an average yield 4.85 percent, sharply down from 7.8 percent a month ago.

For the first time, the Treasury set a target range for the CTZ sale, as it does for other bonds. It gives a set amount for bill auctions.

The Treasury had planned to sell between 1.5 billion and 2.5 billion euros of CTZs. ($1 = 0.7654 euros)

Louisville coach Rick Pitino to quit college basketball when contract expires

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Rick Pitino said Tuesday that he won't coach past the 2016-2017 season when his current contract ends at Louisville.

"When you're 59, you're realistic that you don't have a whole lot of years left," Pitino said at a news conference before the No. 4 Cardinals play Georgetown on Wednesday. "My contract's going to run out in 2017. I'm not coaching any more after that."

The former Providence and Kentucky coach has guided the Cardinals to a 12-0 record so far this season.

Louisville's Athletic Association granted Pitino, the only men's coach to lead three different programs to the Final Four, a four-year contract extension in August. He'll make $3 million in base salary until the end of the 2013 season, followed by $3.9 million a year.

Pitino didn't use the word 'retire,' but has said in the past that Louisville would be his last coaching stop. He's 253-96 in his 11th season at Louisville, which reached the Final Four in 2005.

The Cardinals will host the Hoyas in their Big East Conference opener before traveling to face rival and No. 3 Kentucky on Saturday.

Pitino said Louisville hasn't started preparing for Kentucky.

"One thing I've learned to do with my age, I really don't look ahead," said Pitino, who went 219-50 in eight seasons at Kentucky and won the 1996 national championship. "For years, I've been preaching the precious present and having to always subscribe to it."

Senior guard Chris Smith echoed his coach.

"We haven't talked about Kentucky one time yet, and we're going to keep it like that until we come out with a W tomorrow," he said.

ISRAEL: Police clash with ultra-Orthodox protesters over harrassment report

REUTERS - Israeli police and ultra-Orthodox protesters clashed on Monday in a troubled Israeli town on the outskirts of Jerusalem where protests have flared over demands to crack down on zealots accused of harassing women.

A police officer was injured and several black-robed protesters taken into custody in the disturbances that erupted after a public outcry over televised footage of an eight-year-old Israeli girl complaining of verbal abuse from black-robed Orthodox men while on her way to school.

?Nazis, Nazis,? religious protesters in the town of Beit Shemesh shouted at Israeli officers escorting them from the scene, Israeli television footage showed.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said one of the protesters was arrested on suspicion of throwing a rock that slightly injured a police officer. Three other ultra-Orthodox men were being questioned, he said.

He said Israeli police were also investigating complaints that some of the Orthodox men had spat at and spoken ?disrespectfully? at girls en route to an elementary school, where Naama Margolese, 8, whose spotlight television interview was aired on Friday, also attended class.

Police have reinforced their presence in Beit Shemesh where the dispute flared at the weekend, and when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded a crackdown on the zealots some have accused of spitting at or harassing women they see as immodest.

Israeli television crews filming in the town complained rocks were thrown at them in Beit Shemesh on Monday, where ultra-Orthodox men angry at the removal of a sign urging women to avoid certain streets, threw stones.

?We have increased our presence in the town to keep it calm,? Rosenfeld said.

The dispute in Beit Shemesh underscores a widening faultline in Israel between religiously devout and a majority of non-observant Jews, a dispute often exacerbated by the powerful role of ultra-Orthodox political parties in Israeli governments.

Though numbering only 10 percent of Israel?s mostly Jewish population of 7.7 million, ultra-Orthodox voting patterns give them considerable clout, helping to secure them welfare benefits and wider influence.

Rabbis condemn violence

But many rabbis have insisted the incidents in Beit Shemesh were the acts of a fringe minority. Some rabbis, among them members of Netanyahu?s leading ultra-Orthodox coalition partner, the Shas party, have joined him in condemning the violence.

Netanyahu intervened in the festering dispute as the public began venting outrage at attempts by zealots to spread their practices of gender segregation, embraced by many Orthodox communities citing religious teachings, into the wider public domain.

?In a Western, liberal democracy, the public realm is open and safe for all, men and women both, and neither harassment nor discrimination have any place there,? Netanyahu told his cabinet on Sunday.

Israeli women have complained for years of black-robed religiously fervent men forcing them to sit separately at the back of public buses.

More recently, and largely in Jerusalem, some rabbis have taken to demanding that businesses avoid posting photographs of women or employ them in any of the shops they patronise.

But the controversy Israelis have now dubbed ?exclusion of women? burst into the headlines only recently after an incident involving a military base where Orthodox male soldiers walked out of a ceremony in protest of a performance by female singers.

With the focal point having moved to Beit Shemesh, activists have made plans to hold a larger rally there on Tuesday.

Some in the city fear the dispute may scar relations among an already delicate mix of religiously observant immigrants living alongside Israelis embracing a more modern lifestyle.

Matti Rosensweig, a spokesman for Beit Shemesh told reporters there that the mayor was ?working overtime to try and calm the atmosphere.?

"Basketball Wives" Evelyn Lozada Sued For Helping Blow NBA Star's Fortune

'Basketball Wives' Star Sued for Helping Blow NBA Star's Fortune

1223_antoine_walker_ex_getty_ex2
Evelyn Lozada
-- one of the stars of "Basketball Wives" who was once engaged to former NBA All-Star Antoine Walker -- is being sued for allegedly receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars illegally.

The story is shocking.? Walker raked in a whopping $110 million during his NBA career, in addition to untold millions in endorsements and other deals ... and he blew ALL OF IT and a lot more.

Walker filed for bankruptcy last year, and now the bankruptcy trustee smells a rat.? It seems Walker gave Lozada $560,000 when he already knew he was going belly up.? The trustee has sued Lozada, claiming the transfer was fraudulent -- an attempt to hide money from legitimate creditors.

The trustee says Lozada used the money to start a Miami shoe store called Dulce, and now the trustee wants the $560k back.

We're told Lozada and Walker insist there was no funny business.? He gave her the money to help pay her bills.? Sources say Lozada funded Dulce NOT with the $560k, but by selling her engagement ring.? And, our sources say, Lozada had no idea Walker was so deep in debt.

Rich people's problems ...

Frankincense, Christmas staple, 'doomed': Scientists

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then?frankincense?production could be doomed altogether.

Trees that produce frankincense, a fragrant resin used in incense and perfumes and a central part of the Christmas story, are declining so fast that production could be halved over the next 15 years, scientists said on Wednesday.

In a study published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology, ecologists from the Netherlands and Ethiopia looked at large-scale field studies and predicted that tree numbers could decline by 90 percent in the next 50 years.

If fire, grazing and insect attack, the most likely causes of decline, remain unchecked, then frankincense production could be doomed altogether, they warned.

Frankincense, best known in religious teachings as one of the gifts laid before the newborn Messiah, is obtained by tapping various species of Boswellia, a small, deciduous tree that grows across Africa from northern Nigeria to the highlands of Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Cutting the Boswellia's bark produces the frankincense resin, a white substance with a strong, sweet smell. The resin is burnt in churches, mosques and at ceremonies, as well as being used by the perfume industry and in herbal medicines.

Despite its economic importance, incense has been traded internationally for thousands of years, little is known about how tapping affects Boswellia populations.

Working in an isolated part of northwest Ethiopia near the source of the Blue Nile, a research team led by Frans Bongers of Wageningen University in the Netherlands studied 13 two-hectare plots, some where trees were tapped for frankincense and some where they were untapped.

Over two years, they monitored survival, growth and seed production of more than 6,000 Boswellia trees and used the data to build mathematical models to predict the fate of Boswellia populations in coming years. The forecasts suggest Boswellia populations are declining so dramatically that frankincense production could be halved in the next 15 years.

"Current management of Boswellia populations is clearly unsustainable," Bongers said in a statement. "Our models show that within 50 years, populations of Boswellia will be decimated, and the declining populations mean frankincense production is doomed."

The researchers found that all the Boswellia populations they studied are declining, not only those from tapped trees, a finding that suggests factors other than tapping are at the root of the problem.

Bongers said the main causes of the trees' decline are likely to be burning, grazing and attack by the long-horn beetle, which lays its eggs under the Boswellia's bark.

The scientists urged local authorities to introduce better management incentives to ensure farmers work harder to protect Boswellia trees. In the short-term this meant preventing fires and beetle attack, Bongers said, but in the longer-term, large areas should be set aside and protected for five to 10 years to allow Boswellia saplings to become established.

Banks' advisory fee slump deepens in crisis-hit fourth quarter (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? Europe's debt woes dragged worldwide investment banking income down this year, data showed, with fees on the continent slumping to the lowest quarterly level ever recorded and company listings and acquisitions grinding to a near halt.

The number of bond deals across the world fell in the fourth quarter to levels not seen since after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008, according to Thomson Reuters and Freeman Consulting data.

In Europe, fees raised since October from bonds, flotations and mergers and acquisitions stand at the lowest level ever recorded by the data providers.

A stronger start to the year in areas such as mergers and acquisitions fizzled out, leaving investment banks' overall haul of fees at $72.6 billion -- down 8 percent on 2010..

Germany's Deutsche Bank (DBKG.n) claimed the top fee spot in Europe, relegating JPMorgan (JPM.N) to second place -- even if the U.S. firm is still first by fees globally.

JPMorgan lost ground in European equity capital markets (ECM), the business that arranges listings and rights issues, in part after missing out on commodities firm Glencore's $10 billion flotation, one of the biggest of the year.

Since that listing in May, however, ECM activity in Europe tailed off dramatically, leaving little but a trail of postponed or cancelled deals as market turmoil intensified.

"We had a roaring start in 2011 and then it just died," said Craig Coben, head of EMEA ECM at Bank of America Merrill Lynch in London. "September, October and November have probably been some of the worst periods we have ever experienced in new equity issuance in Europe."

BofA ML ranked third globally and seventh in Europe by ECM fees so far this year, according to the data, which ran up to December20.

Few are confident that 2012 will dramatically pick up, at least first thing in January, which usually ushers in the best quarter of the year for banks as companies rush to raise funding - the January "halo effect," as one banker described it.

For that to happen, policymakers in Europe would have to have allayed investors fears over a Greek debt bailout and the broader euro zone debt crisis.

Investors have until now stayed on the sidelines, shying away from equity and debt deals.

This year's faltering deal volumes and tumbling fees have already prompted investment banks in Europe, the United States and Asia to slash costs and headcount.

Close to 130,000 major lay-off plans were announced this year, a Reuters tally shows.

Advisory fees in Asia Pacific held up better than in Europe in the fourth quarter, bolstered by a rush of flotations, although across the whole year they still stand around $5 billion below income reaped by advisers in EMEA.

This came in at $18.2 billion. The U.S. investment banking fee pool remains the biggest, at $31.6 billion.

Switzerland's UBS (UBSN.VX), which was hit this year by a rogue trading scandal, kept its grip on the Asian market as the top adviser by fees.

In the United States, JPMorgan was the top bank by investment banking fees, pushing rival BofA ML to second place.

'Farmville' maker's stock lukewarm in public debut (AP)

NEW YORK ? Zynga's stock got a lukewarm reception in its public debut Friday.

The online game developer's stock fell 36 cents, or nearly 4 percent, to $9.64 in midday trading, though earlier it traded slightly higher. It was by no means the eye-popping jump that's been the norm for freshly public Internet darlings such as Groupon Inc. and LinkedIn Corp.

But CEO Mark Pincus said Zynga's focus is on "delivering great products" that expand audience for social games over the next few years ? and not on the next trading day.

"We didn't have any expectations coming into this whole process," he said in an interview. "We decided to go public a long time ago."

Zynga Inc., which specializes in Facebook games, raised $1 billion in its initial public offering of stock. That makes it the largest Internet-related IPO since Google Inc. went public in 2004 and raised $1.4 billion. Pincus rang the Nasdaq's opening bell in San Francisco, a first in the city for a freshly public company.

The company's roughly 1,700 San Francisco employees woke up at the crack of down to celebrate with cinnamon buns and hot cocoa. Zynga also delivered video of the opening ceremony over the Internet to its offices around the world.

Zynga's $10-per-share IPO price was at the top of its expected range, a sign that investors were eager to dig into the latest in a series of high-profile technology IPOs this year. It values the company at about $7 billion.

Online deals site Groupon, which began trading in early November, has a market capitalization twice that of Zynga's, $14 billion. But Zynga is selling a much bigger chunk of its available shares, 14.3 percent compared with Groupon's 5.5 percent. It's an issue of supply and demand ? selling more shares means investors don't have to scramble to get their hands on them.

Zynga rounds out a year of high-profile Internet IPOs. The biggest of them all, though ? Facebook ? is not expected until after April.

Zynga charges small amounts of money ? a few cents, sometimes a couple of dollars ? for virtual items in online games. The games are free to play. Players can acquire items that range from crops in "Farmville" to buildings in "CityVille," its most popular Facebook game.

With its huge player base and a few loyal spenders, Zynga earned a net income of $90.6 million in 2010, an unusual pre-IPO money-maker in the sector.

Cowen & Co. analyst Doug Creutz, however, initiated coverage Friday with a "Neutral" rating on the stock. Although Zynga is the leader in Facebook gaming, he's concerned that it won't be able to grow fast enough to justify its stock price. Growth in Facebook gaming has slowed, and Zynga's market share has declined from 50 percent to 38 percent of daily active users, he wrote.

He's also concerned that Zynga's famously aggressive and hard-charging culture may not be the best field to grow good games in. Others have raised concerns that the focus on deadlines and profits might be squeezing out creativity and talent.

In November, Groupon raised $700 million in its IPO. The granddaddy of all Internet IPOs might happen next year, as Facebook Inc. is expected to raise as much as $10 billion.

Zynga is trading under the ticker "ZNGA" on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Beaten Giants fan speaks on camera for first time

(AP) ? The San Francisco Giants fan who was nearly beaten to death on opening day has spoken on camera for the first time since the attack.

In the video clip aired on San Francisco's NBC affiliate Thursday, Dr. Nancy Snyderman of the news magazine show "Rock Center" introduces herself to Bryan Stow, who is sitting on a bed.

After she introduces herself, Stow asks Snyderman: "How are you?" She says she's doing well, and Stow replies: "That's good."

"Rock Center" released the video to preview its full report on Stow's recovery at an undisclosed rehab center. The video is scheduled to air Monday at 10 p.m.

The paramedic and father of two young children spent months in a medically induced coma after being punched in the head, kicked and slammed to the ground outside Dodger Stadium last March.

He was moved from the hospital to the rehab center in October as he continues to recover from a traumatic brain injury.

Stow's family has chronicled his recovery on their blog. Last month, they reported Stow was still showing signs of confusion and frustration as he works to regain his ability to move and speak. They say he does recognize friends and family, whom he joined last month for Thanksgiving.

Louie Sanchez, 29, and Marvin Norwood, 30, were arrested and charged in the attack following a Los Angeles police investigation. Investigators describe the assault as the culmination of a string of confrontations they had with randomly selected Giants fans at the stadium.

Sanchez and Norwood both have pleaded not guilty to mayhem, assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, and battery with serious bodily injury.

'Arrested Development' Star 'Looking Forward' To Movie

'I'm certainly more optimistic than I was four months ago,' David Cross tells MTV News about returning to the Bluth household.
By Josh Wigler

"Arrested Development" fans across the world rejoiced in early October when it was announced that the cult comedy classic would make a comeback in the form of a new television miniseries and movie. Since then, Netflix has come aboard to host the new "Arrested" series, adding further hope to the fact that this time, finally, for serious, no fakesies or backsies, the Bluths are really returning to the screen.

Even David Cross — who starred on the show as world-renowned analrapist (that's analyst/therapist, you pervs) Tobias Fünke — is growing increasingly optimistic about the comeback. In the past, Cross has responded to rumors of an "Arrested" movie with an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude. He still maintains that position to a degree, but even Cross admits that the chances of future "Development" are better than ever.

"I'm certainly more optimistic than I was four months ago," Cross told MTV News during a recent interview to promote "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret," his IFC comedy series returning for a second season January 6. "But I still — not being jaded or cynical about it, but just being realistic — I will believe it when I see it. I'll believe it when it's all happening. But I'm definitely more optimistic now than I was a couple of months ago."

Cross added that even though plans for "Arrested Development" aren't fully firmed up just yet, he's still looking forward to getting back into Tobias' famous denim cutoffs.

"For me, Tobias is such a fun character to play," he said. "I'm looking forward to it, as I know everyone in the cast and crew is. Everyone is really looking forward to doing it."

At the moment, Cross is only slightly less in the dark than most of us when it comes to what the future holds for his "Arrested Development" character.

"I've seen ['Arrested' creator Mitch Hurwitz] a couple of times since that New Yorker event where they announced [the show's return]," he said. "He has kept me up to date with his ideas. I don't think they've been put down on paper yet. I imagine based on past experience, as it starts to get fleshed out, he'll start telling me things and picking my brain about things."

If you can't wait until the return of "Arrested Development," you can get plenty more of Cross on "Todd Margaret" when season two premieres in January.

What do you want to see from the "Arrested Development" revival?

Oil prices up with stock rally, Mideast tension (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices jumped about 2 percent Tuesday as tensions rose in Iran and strong retail sales put a rosier glow on the U.S. economy.

Benchmark crude rose $2.32, or 2.4 percent, to $100.09 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil imported by some U.S. refineries, rose $2.05 to $109.13 a barrel in London.

Oil prices shot up shortly after the stock market opened for business.

Analysts said traders were reacting to more saber-rattling by Iran following accusations that it is building nuclear weapons.

Iranian leaders said the country's navy plans to run drills to practice closing the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf. About a third of the world's oil tanker traffic passes through the strategic waterway, and even a brief closure could crimp oil supplies around the world. Longer, more expensive routes would have to be used to transport crude from the region.

Rumors swirled about what the Federal Reserve might do at its Tuesday policy meeting to further stimulate the economy. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries also will meet Wednesday in Europe to decide how much oil to bring to the market.

"There's just a lot of chatter out there," said Addison Armstrong, director of market research at Tradition Energy. "There are a lot of possibilities of what might happen," but traders are choosing to err on the side of buying rather than selling.

On Tuesday the government said that consumers' retail spending rose in November for the sixth straight month. The U.S. economy is driven by consumer spending, and more spending points to stronger demand for oil. A separate government report said that U.S. businesses built up their stockpiles in October. That is another encouraging sign for the economy, suggesting growing confidence among businesses that they can sell those goods.

Gas pump prices slipped by less than a penny Tuesday to a national average of $3.269 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. A gallon of regular is about 15 cents cheaper than a month ago and 29 cents cheaper than a year ago.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 3.04 cents to $2.9265 per gallon, and gasoline futures increased by 5.52 cents to $2.6188 per gallon. Natural gas rose by 3.5 cents to $3.288 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Intel and IBM Reveal the Future of Computer Chips (Mashable)

The past 24 hours have seen two of the biggest names in technology reveal the future of computer chips -- intentionally or otherwise. A leaked document from Intel shows the company setting the bar for the next generation of processors, which should start to roll out early next year. Meanwhile, IBM has laid out its long view of processing technology, beginning to chart the undiscovered country of what comes after silicon becomes obsolete. The company has demonstrated some of these emerging techs, which often outperform their silicon equivalents and can be built using similar production techniques.

[More from Mashable: Ultrabooks Get Ready for Their Close-Up at CES 2012 [VIDEO]]

The Coming of Ivy

In a leaked document reported by X-Bit Labs, Intel reveals its product road map for Ivy Bridge, the next wave of computer chips that will soon be in PCs and Macs. Ivy Bridge is the company's push into the 22-nanometer range of microprocessors. The smaller chips get, the greater their processing frequencies.

Ivy Bridge means machines with nearly 4GHz of processing power, according to the document. Intel's top-of-the-line Core i7 processor will boast 3.9GHz in a quad-core design, meaning that separate parts of the chip can work independently up to that speed. This is useful in software, such as games, that can have multiple operations at once. The lowest-end chip, a Core i5 design, will still be a quad-core running at 2.7GHz, still fairly speedy by today's standards.

[More from Mashable: 5 Ways Tech Companies Are Committing to Sustainability]

Although the Ivy Bridge chips use a novel technology known as Tri-Gate, they're still based on silicon. Intel co-founder Gordon Moore famously wrote about how the number of transistors on silicon chips would double roughly every two years, and technology has generally stayed at that pace. It's so consistent that the observation has become known as Moore's Law.

While chipmakers are still probing the depths to which they go in terms of keeping the number of those transistors ever-increasing, they will hit that limit soon, experts say. Once circuitry is shrunk to around seven nanometers, quantum effects start to take over, and it will be impossible to go any smaller -- not with silicon, anyway.

Beyond Silicon

Meanwhile, IBM just showcased its long-term plan, as reported in the Wall Street Journal, for going beyond silicon and taking processing power to new heights. The company is betting on three technologies: carbon nanotubes, graphene, and something called "racetrack memory."

The first approach would involve swapping out silicon in favor of carbon. IBM described how the company built a transistor made out of carbon nanotubes in the 10-nanometer range. Besides the attractively small size, it outperformed silicon in several key metrics.

Graphene, discovered in 2004, has been hailed as a new kind of wonder substance -- though it's essentially a form of carbon as well, similar to pencil lead. Graphene is the king of small -- it's just one atom thick -- and it's highly conductive. IBM built the first graphene circuit earlier this year, and now it says it can build graphene chips using production lines usually used for silicon, which bodes well for mass production.

Racetrack memory involves replacing flash memory, used in everything from iPhones to SD cards, with microscopic magnets shifted along tiny wire loops called nanowires. IBM has demonstrated this tech, too, also built with normal product lines.

The Need for (Processing) Speed

Think your computer's fast enough? That's great, but there are tons of applications for the emerging technologies that are dying for more progress in processing power. Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 push today's machines to their limits, and the vision of developers is only limited by the processing power of the machines.

In addition, the entire fields of quantum computing and hypercomputing depend on taking processing power to heretofore uncharted levels. IBM itself has big plans for new platforms that emerge from its much-publicized Watson project, and those would need advanced processing power as well.

While the future of computers is still uncertain, in short, chipmakers are working furiously to ensure it doesn't come to a dead stop.

Wine night sours fast on 'Real Housewives'

Adam Olszewski/Bravo / InStyle.com

Kyle Richards makes sure Taylor gets out of the house ... but not without her wrap on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills"

By Lia Haberman, E! Online

The title of tonight's "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" episode is "Malibu Party From Hell." Nice try, Bravo. There was some minor clawing, but anyone who caught last season knows Camille Grammer holds the title of hosting the most hellish party Malibu's golden shores have ever witnessed.

Still, things did get ugly at Brandi Glanville's belly-dancing beach party. But it won't be a multi-episode nightmare for the network?to tease out.?In fact, things started out innocently enough -- especially, given today's real-life reports of Kim Richards' problems....

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills'" Kim Richards in Rehab

The troubled housewife has allegedly checked into rehab, though there's been no official confirmation. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the Richards sister barely made an appearance in tonight's episode.

Instead, we were treated to a flashback of Kyle Richards' mother-in-law Estella getting a face lift. And some not-so-subtle Dr. Paul Nassif peer pressure encouraging Kyle to fix a few creases.

But despite having admitted to some work in the past, Kyle's promoting the natural beauty route tonight. "Drop the Botox, drop the fillers and let's fight fair," she challenges the women of 90210. May we also suggest blocking Paul's number? (Sorry, doc!)

MORE: "Real Housewives'" Taylor Armstrong to Pen Memoir About Marriage to Russell, Domestic Abuse

Cameras also capture Kyle and Mauricio Umansky's Cinco de Mayo celebration. Kyle's hubs is really proud of his Mexican heritage, so this fiesta is really important to him. Only, doesn't it seem like the gringos, like Kyle's ladysitter Justin and pals Michele and Faye Resnick, are the ones enjoying margaritas? ?Ol?!?

Back to Brandi's workshop turned belly-dancing party. (Anyone else wish she had stuck to the original plan?)?Taylor Armstrong spends the limo ride with Kyle psyching herself up for a confrontation with Camille, while over in Camille's limo, pitbulls D.D. and Liz are snarling for a fight.

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: Russell Armstrong's Therapy Sesh Reveals Anger and Neglect

All seems fine at first when Camille and Taylor share a long, bony hug and the women kick back with their vino. The beachfront property, which belongs to Brandi's friend Jen, is gorgeous, there's plenty of food and no sex instructors. "It was tastefully done," sniffs Adrienne Maloof.

Things get a little raunchier when the belly-dancing instructor begins. For some reason, Kyle feels compelled to trot out her party tricks: the splits, the bump 'n' grind and the hair whip. And to shine a laser pointer at Brandi's nipples. Is that really appropriate when you're doing calisthenics in a mini dress on the floor?

That's when D.D. decides to strike, all in the name of clearing the air.

MORE: "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" Recap: Taylor Armstrong's Unexpected Intervention

She seems way angrier at Taylor for not returning Camille's calls than any of the women actually involved in the tea party intervention. (Getting together for any kind of food and beverage is a high-risk proposition for these people.)

And she just can't stop: "I'm sick of it. You won't return her phone calls. That's f----- up." That's when Adrienne pushes D.D. back inside, but the damage has been done and Taylor's having a complete meltdown. Adrienne comes to the rescue again and tries to cover Taylor's mouth before she can say something that gets captured and dissected on camera.

PHOTOS: Top 10 Craziest Housewives of 2010

Seeing things spin out of control, Brandi decides the only way to regain the spotlight control is to kick Taylor out. Something Taylor and Kyle don't take too kindly. ?

Cue a mini catfight with Kyle as pal Linda Thompson pleads,?"You guys are all embarrassing yourselves by being out of control. We are an evolved species."?

Was D.D. just a troublemaker? Should Brandi have kicked Taylor out? Are the women of Beverly Hills really evolved or just a notch above clubbing each other around a campfire? Share your thoughts on the Clicker's Facebook page.?

Same Sex Romance Comes to a Galaxy Far, Far Away (Newsarama.com)

Same-sex relationships are coming to the "Star Wars" universe, courtesy of video game developer BioWare and publisher Electronic Arts' new massively multiplayer online role- playing game (or "MMORPGs" or "MMOs" for short), "Star Wars: The Old Republic," and the decision is getting people talking.

MMOs are games that create immersive virtual environments in which millions of players can interact with computer-generated characters as well as characters created by fellow gamers. While this is BioWare's first MMO, the developer is known among fans for the emphasis they place on romantic relationships between characters in their single-player role-playing games. In the past, BioWare games have featured same-sex relationships between men and women, and in the case of the immensely popular sci-fi game "Mass Effect," relationships between men and women with an asexual alien.

BioWare originally announced that players and their companions in "Star Wars: The Old Republic" would only be able to experience mixed-gender romantic relationships. After many inquiries from fans asking the developer to explain the decision, earlier this week a new forum post by Stephen Reid, the senior online community manager for the game, showed up on the company's official website announcing that those fans had been heard and same-sex romance will be added to the game.

BioWare's statement explained that while the game will still launch with only male/female relationships, they will be adding same gender romance options in future updates.

"Due to the design constraints of a fully voiced MMO of this scale and size, many choices had to be made as to the launch and post-launch feature set. Same gender romances with companion characters in 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' will be a post-launch feature. Because 'The Old Republic' is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options."

"Companion characters" are computer-controlled characters that follow player-created characters around the virtual world, aiding them as gamers maneuver through the story.

The response to BioWare's announcement has been massive. There are 326 pages of comments as of Friday afternoon on the official "Star Wars: The Old Republic" forum alone. They range from "thank you for listening to our requests" to "how dare you expose my children to this."

The game has no firm release date, only a release window of "holiday 2011." It has also already received an ESRB rating of "T for Teen," meaning the game is recommended for players 13 and older. Neither facts have stopped detractors from crying foul, such as John Nolte on the blog "Big Hollywood," who starts his post on the subject with "Say goodbye to your child's innocence," and ends with the inaccurate proclamation, "Announcing the gay relationships AFTER the game has been sold is pure bait and switch."

The game already has reportedly broken preorder records for publisher Electronic Arts.
