Gas prices rise on St Fergus outage

LONDON (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose on Thursday morning as an unplanned outage at the St Fergus gas terminal reduced North Sea gas supplies, leaving the system undersupplied.

The unplanned outage at the St Fergus terminal would lead to a production loss of 11.5 million cubic metres (mcm) per day and was expected to last for five days, operator Total said.

Gas prices for delivery on Friday were trading around 56.30 pence per therm at 0750 GMT on Thursday, up half a pence from the previous morning, and within-day delivery gas prices were also up about 0.5 pence to 56.50 pence a therm.

National Grid data showed that gas demand in Britain was expected to be 179.5 mcm on Thursday, almost 27 percent below the seasonal norm.

Despite the low demand, the system was expected to be 3.2 mcm short, with total supplies expected at 176.3 mcm.

"Consumption is forecasted up for day-ahead, which is bullish. The other bullish factor is the lower flow from UKCS (UK Continental Shelf)," analysts at Thomson Reuters Point Carbon said.

Further out on the curve, gas prices for delivery in winter were also up slightly, trading around 65.30 pence per therm.

Analysts have said Britain's gas supplies could be squeezed in winter should a cold snap collide with North Sea supply outages or booming Asian demand sap up supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG).

"What the loss of LNG does, is make peak supply risks more acute and thus we expect to see prices drift upwards in Q4 and be sustained at higher average prices in 2013 than seen in 2012," Barclays Capital said in a research note on Thursday.

BarCap said it expected the UK will lose 13 bcm of LNG supply in 2012 and another 2 bcm on top of that in 2013, but added that the LNG gap would continue to be met by Norwegian pipeline volumes.

"While the UK gas market should remain relatively well supplied this year, the biggest prevailing risk is weather and for a cold Q4 12 to draw down storage and bring back the risks of winter price spikes," the bank said.

Czech hops harvest to be down by 26 pct

PRAGUE (AP) ? Fear not, beer lovers! The Czech hops harvest is expected to plummet by around a quarter this year due to bad weather ? but there's plenty of stock to quench the huge thirst both at home and abroad.

As well as being home to more beer drinkers per capita than anywhere else in the world, the Czech Republic is also one of the top producers of hops ? the dried seed cones that give beer its bitter taste and aroma. Their hops are highly sought after and exported to about 80 countries, including Japan, China, Germany and Russia.

The Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic said Friday preliminary figures show a yield of about 0.95 - 1.00 metric tons per hectare compared with the average of 1.11 metric tons per hectare. They cited freezing temperatures in February and a drought in spring.

The country's overall production is expected to fall by 26 percent to 4,500 metric tons from 6,088 metric tons in 2011.

Authorities say there are enough supplies following the exceptionally high harvests of the previous two years ? and that prices are unlikely to rise.

"This year's harvest won't have any significant impact on the price of hops," said Bohumil Pazler, the chairman of the union.

Hops, soaring seven 7 meters (23 feet) into the air and supported by wire, have been cultivated on Czech territory for over 1,000 years. The heartland near the western towns of Zatec and Rakovnik provides an ideal climate for the local dominant brand known as Saaz, a fine aroma hop with a low concentration of alpha acids which give beer its bitter flavor.

Almost 80 percent of hops production is exported ? and more than two thirds of that is Saaz, which the Czechs call the "Roll Royce" among hops.

"The Czech Saaz is the best in the world," Jiri Vesely, the Czech Beer and Malt Association executive director said.

In 2007, Saaz was granted the EU's Protected Designation of Origin label as the top hops brand. It is used by brewers for premium products.

Exports to the United States crashed to virtually zero in the 1990s after the beer giant Anheuser Busch stopped using Czech hops as a response to the ongoing trademark dispute with the Czech state-run brewer Budejovicky Budvar and a refusal of the Czech government to sell Budvar to its U.S. rival.

The Decreasing Workstation Upgrade Cycle | The Business Edition

Since computer workstations became widespread in offices, regular upgrades were considered to be a necessary expense. As new software was release, businesses had to upgrade their workstations to keep up with the system requirements. Recent technology, however, is changing this upgrade process, and many businesses are holding off on their upgrades. Here are some of the factors that are causing this change.

1. Better technology

Computers hardware is still consistently improving. The advances in processor speed has slowed, but computers are being released with more processors than the previous generation, and the price of RAM continues to drop. The system requirements of software, however, are not keeping pace. For office software, computers that would otherwise have been considered obsolete are able to run modern software fine, and businesses are choosing to use their computers as long as they perform well.

2. Skipped OS updates

Platforms are also being updated less frequently. Businesses are finding little utility in upgrading their operating systems, which allows them to stick with older hardware. Many businesses find that Windows XP is sufficient for their needs, and some have not upgraded since switching to Windows XP years ago. Windows Vista is largely considered a flop, but much of its trouble came because businesses had already developed their workflows to their satisfaction. Windows 7 has become popular, but many experts are questioning if users will upgrade to the next iteration of Windows.

3. Telecommuting

A growing number of businesses are allowing staff to work from home for at least part of the week. Because of this, companies need to ensure that their software is compatible with the computers staff members use at home. Some companies are choosing to use older versions of office software instead of upgrading. Even in cases where new software would be beneficial, companies are valuing the reduced hardware costs and telecommuting ability more highly than updated software.

4. The cloud paradigm

The cloud paradigm is sweeping through the business world. Much like the era of thin clients, cloud networks do not have high system requirements for workstations. Each workstation needs to have an appropriate networking card, a web browser and, in some cases, appropriate support software. The CPU-intensive tasks, however, are often handled by the server, and each workstation merely needs to be able to display what the server computers. This paradigm also has the advantage of centralized storage and the ability to share RAM between computers. Companies can simply upgrade their servers at their demands increase, and further developments may actually reduce workstations? system requirements.

Computer upgrades in early years were driven by the inability of hardware to operate as efficiently as possible. Many experts, however, now believe that computers of today are capable of handling the vast majority of what businesses require, and most expect companies to increase the time between workstation upgrades.

Despite drones and blimps, rocket attacks in Afghanistan prove hard to stop (+video)

NATO officials say Afghan militants fired rockets on Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan, damaging a plane used by American Gen. Martin Dempsey.

The attack on Bagram Air Field, which damaged Joint Chiefs of Staff?Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey?s plane, is a common phenomenon on most military bases across Afghanistan.

The sprawling Bagram base, or the equally large Kandahar Air Field, are attractively large targets for militants who might not have the stomach to launch a frontal assault on foreign or Afghan troops.?

NATO officials today said they were unsure of the exact type of weapon fired at Bagram, which immobilized General Dempsey?s C-17 transport plane and slightly injured two American maintenance crew, but?Chinese-made 107mm rockets are one of the most common used in such attacks.

The rockets can be easily set up on a rock or another firm surface and crudely aimed in the direction of its target, sometimes up to three miles away. Accuracy is mostly guesswork, which probably explains why there are comparatively few casualties despite them being a common occurrence.

Ensuring militants aren?t detected by the plethora of technology held by the US ? and other foreign ? militaries has become a game of cat-and-mouse.

Getting the trigger on a delay mechanism has become the most important part to avoid being caught. The omnipresent surveillance blimps, early-warning rocket detectors and, most worrying for militants, pilot-less drones circling nearby, mean that once a rocket is launched, coalition forces will usually know pretty quickly exactly where it came from.

Whoever set up the rocket would want to have already fled the area or be prepared for almost immediate retaliation by NATO forces.

But militants have started to adapt.

At a US base in the southern Afghan province of Uruzgan in 2010, the base was regularly getting hit by rockets and mortars. Every time one hit, coalition forces would scramble to the launch site, sometimes less than two miles from the base?s perimeter. Each time, they found nothing.

It led to theories on how the (presumed) man whom US soldiers dubbed??Rocket Man? and, slightly more creatively, ?Elton John,? was managing to fire the rockets on delay. Perhaps he had set up a mobile phone trigger system or just a simple clock-based timer. Yet the best theory was even cheaper, and simpler: He was using a block of ice.?

The block would be set up to so after it melted, the change in weight on the contraption would make two trigger wires connect and the rocket would be launched.?

Whatever it was, it worked:?A year later on the base, rockets were still being fired and no suspect had been caught.?

B2B Telemarketing Services | Marketing Direct uses tested sales ...

George Clay

?The video explains my services?how my telemarketing system works and what I can do for you. Introductory cold calls, follow-up calls, list building & lead management. B2B high end sales my niche.

While there?s no quick fix for getting you QUALITY new business appointments, more new customers and more sales overnight, ?my sales prospecting ?and telemarketing system ?can get your sales organization back on track.

I work exclusively for sales organizations where?lead nurturing and relationship building?are key to closing each sale. Not one call telemarketing or call center work. Nothing like that.

My appointment setting and lead management process are entirely different. Be sure you watch the video because you?ll better understand IF my service is right for your business.

?I?m one of a successful minority who is good at doing what most sales people dread ??over-the-phone prospecting.

Yes! Cold calling is my bread and butter.

Getting?your small business QUALITY new business appointments with higher conversion rates and more revenue per sales lead than is typically?achieved by direct mail,?e-mail marketing, or traditional?telemarketing?is what my service is all about.

I make things happen by working the phones and making the calls.

Call me a cold calling pro or over-the-phone-rainmaker or whatever you like.?Bottom line: I can open business opportunities for you that are new, fresh,??shape-able? ? free of baggage & history. That?s the beauty of using the?phone to create new business.

Your calls?are important?and making sure they?re done right is why I don?t outsource to third party?call centers.

Sure this limits the projects I take on.

But I?m here to give you service that stands out from the crowd.

To make working with me pay out for YOU consider a SMALL trial project. You and I work together so the sales leads and appointments I generate for you convert into paying customers for YOUR business.

During this trial project some leads are upgraded?some downgraded. Yes,?it?s a process. But from cold lead through satisfied customer it brings you better qualified prospects with higher conversion rates than you can get with direct mail, email marketing or traditional telemarketing.

I develop your prospect list by building solid relationships with key prospects in the markets and the companies you want to reach.

Creating trust?with each prospect is my primary goal ? NOT making a sale. Your calls?are important?and making sure they?re done this way is?why I don?t outsource?to third party call centers.

I start the lead qualification process with introductory cold calls?that qualify each prospect to determine if your business is a good fit for what they need. It?s here the weak prospects are weeded out?and the better qualified prospects ?are engaged for careful and methodical follow-up calls. ?This is where the all important relationship building ?process begins.

With each call I capture key details?including:

  • Your prospect?s interest level in your goods or services.
  • Identify their needs?learn about existing suppliers? and how YOU can pre-empt the competition.
  • Ask the qualifying questions?to make certain your offer matches their needs.
  • Learn their ?hot buttons? ? what is it you can do for them that matters most.

More effectively than responsiveness to clopidogrel

Munich, Germany August 26 2012: Global platelet reactivity is more effective than responsiveness to clopidogrel in identifying acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients at high risk of ischemic events, according to research presented at the ESC Congress today. The results from the RECLOSE 2-ACS study were presented by Dr Rossella Marcucci from Italy.

The Responsiveness to Clopidogrel and Stent thrombosis 2 ACS (RECLOSE 2-ACS) study is a prospective, observational, referral center cohort study of 1,789 patients with acute coronary syndromes undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) at the Division of Cardiology, Careggi Hospital, Florence, Italy.

Dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel is the cornerstone of therapy in these patients to improve prognosis and reduce adverse cardiovascular events, stent thrombosis and cardiovascular death.

"In recent years, we and other groups have focused our attention on the role of platelet inhibition," said Dr Marcucci. "We found that a significant percentage of patients on clopidogrel therapy the so-called nonresponders to clopidogrel had a high platelet reactivity (HPR) on clopidogrel and a significantly higher risk of developing an adverse ischemic event at a follow-up of 2 years."

A number of genetic and acquired conditions are associated with a high platelet reactivity on clopidogrel. Carriers of a genetic variant (the CYP2C19*2 polymorphism), diabetics, older patients, females and patients with a reduced renal and cardiac function have a higher risk of maintaining a high platelet reactivity on clopidogrel. In addition, the concomitant use of drugs such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with a reduced metabolization of clopidogrel (which is a prodrug and needs to be metabolized to the active drug by the liver) and a high risk of high platelet reactivity.

The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether a high platelet reactivity due to nonresponsiveness to aspirin could also identify ACS patients at high risk of ischemic events. The investigators also evaluated whether the combination of aspirin and clopidogrel nonresponsiveness could identify high risk patients more effectively than one measure alone.

The researchers measured platelet reactivity in response to aspirin and clopidogrel in patients enrolled in the RECLOSE 2-ACS study. They found that approximately 20% of patients had a high platelet reactivity to aspirin and were therefore nonresponders. These patients had a significantly higher prevalence of an ischemic event or cardiac death at the 2 year follow-up (major adverse cardiac events [MACE]: Hazard Ratio [HR]=1.4 [1.0-1.8], p

The researchers calculated the net reclassification index (NRI), which is a method to define whether the addition of a new parameter increases the predictive value. Dr Marcucci said: "We found that adding the response to aspirin to the response to clopidogrel enabled us to recognize a higher number of patients at risk of ischemic events and cardiac events."

Approximately 9% of patients had high platelet reactivity (ie were nonresponders) to both clopidogrel and aspirin. This phenotype is known as global high platelet reactivity (GHPR).

GHPR was significantly associated with cardiovascular ischemic events and cardiac death in a Cox regression analysis (MACE: HR=1.5[1.0-2.2], p=0.02; cardiac death: HR= 1.9[1.2-3.2], p=0.008). The analysis was adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, history of myocardial infarction, serum creatinine higher than 1.5 mg/dl, left ventricular ejection fraction

The figures below show that patients with GHPR have lower survival rates from MACE (p=0.001) and cardiac death (p

Dr Marcucci said: "These results show that global high platelet reactivity is the most effective parameter for identifying ACS patients at high risk of ischemic events."

She added: "This shifts the focus of risk stratification from response to clopidogrel to assessing response to both clopidogrel and aspirin. Responsiveness to both antiplatelet drugs should be assessed in all patients with ACS in order to identify and reduce their risk of ischemic events."

'One small step for man': Was Neil Armstrong misquoted?

Upon taking a "small step" onto the surface of the moon in 1969, Neil Armstrong uttered what would become one of history's most famous one-liners. But strangely, what he actually said is far from clear.

Listeners back on Earth heard, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." But?Armstrong, who died Saturday?(Aug. 25) at the age of 82, maintained afterwards that he actually said something slightly different: "That's one small step for a man..."

"It's just that people just didn't hear [the 'a']," Armstrong told the press after the Apollo 11 mission.

That little indefinite article makes a big difference, semantically speaking. Without it, "man" abstractly represents all of humanity, just like "mankind." Thus, the quote is essentially, ''That's one small step for mankind, one giant leap for mankind."?[Listen to 'One Small Step' Quote]

Despite his initial adamance that he got the grammar right by including the indefinite article, Armstrong acknowledged at a 30-year anniversary event in 1999 that he couldn't hear himself utter the "a" in the audio recording of his moonwalk transmission, according to the Associated Press.

But then, in 2006, computer programmer Peter Shann Ford might have vindicated Armstrong.

Ford downloaded the audio recording of the moon man's words from a NASA website and analyzed the statement with software that allows disabled people to communicate via computers using their nerve impulses.

In a graphical representation of sound waves of the famous sentence, Ford said he found evidence that the missing "a" had been spoken after all: It was a 35-millisecond-long bump of sound between "for" and "man" that would have been too brief for human ears to hear.

"I have reviewed the data and Peter Ford's analysis of it, and I find the technology interesting and useful," Armstrong said in a statement. ''I also find his conclusion persuasive. Persuasive is the appropriate word."

And so was "a," whether spoken or not.

Bootleggers take the big screen in 'Lawless'

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, NBC News

The summer entertainment is quieting down, but Shia LaBeouf's bootlegger film, "Lawless," still looks like it might be worth drinking up. And if you're into pirates or zombies, this is a good DVD/Blu-ray week for you.

TUESDAY: 'The Pirates! Band of Misfits'
No, not those pirates -- not the Caribbean, black-eyeliner-addicted Johnny Depp variety. "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" is an animated comedy done in Wallace and Gromit stop-motion style, with Hugh Grant?as the bumbling?pirate captain and Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek and others also lending their voices. The New Yorker's review?called the action "beautifully staged, delightful and exciting." (Out on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 28.)

TUESDAY: 'Walking Dead' second season
"The Walking Dead" are still walking, and decaying, and eating, and getting shot all to heck by our scrappy band of survivors in AMC's hit gross-out horror series "The Walking Dead." The second season hits DVD and Blu-ray this week. Yes, this is the season where we finally find out what happens to Sophia -- although many fans burned out on caring about her well before the show did. The third season premieres Oct. 14, so rent or buy this season now to ensure you're all caught up for more zombie madness in the fall. (Out on DVD and Blu-ray Aug. 28.)

FRIDAY: 'Lawless'
Today, when you can buy liquor just about anywhere, it's hard to imagine those long-ago Prohibition days, when alcohol was made secretly in bathtubs and hidden farmhouses, and anyone taking a drink was breaking the law of the land. In "Lawless," Shia LaBeouf and?Tom Hardy?play Depression-era bootleggers whose illegal profession wraps them in a blanket of danger, especially when corrupt cops want a sip of the profits. Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Guy Pearce also star. (Opens Aug. 31.)

Thinking of investing in beach property foreclosures? - La Jolla Light

Vicki Johnson Real Estate | Beach Property Foreclosures

Beach property foreclosures spell opportunity for real estate investors.

By Vicki Johnson

San Diego has seen a marked increase in short sales in the last quarter, according to a recent U-T San Diego real estate report. Thanks to improvements in the local market, foreclosures have dipped by 25.3% ? a shift that industry experts believe is due in part to more homeowners seeking short sales as an alternative. These developments spell good news for overall market recovery. But for those considering an investment in beach property foreclosures, how will changing San Diego real estate trends impact buying decisions?

Short sales vs. foreclosures

Short sales make it possible for underwater homeowners to pay less than the total outstanding balance on their mortgages. As a result, they come with a lighter credit burden than full-blown foreclosures ? not to mention a softer blow to the housing market at large. Here in San Diego, short sales are popping up everywhere, from University City, Clairemont and Linda Vista to Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar and La Jolla. But the truth is, while these deals have indeed made a dent in local foreclosures, they have no means eradicated the foreclosure properties from the market landscape. According to June numbers from RealtyTrac, one in every 355 Rancho Santa Fe home sales was a foreclosure, while in La Jolla it was one in ever 420. In other words, distressed home sales are still with us: and that means it is important for buyers and sellers alike to work with an experienced real estate agent and learn how to maximize opportunities under current market conditions.

Buying beach property foreclosures: a savvy move for real estate investors

Given the current market environment, one of the best ways for buyers to capitalize on distressed home sales is through the purchase of coastal foreclosure properties. According to a recent press release, RealtyTrac?s Daren Blomquist urges investors to seize the chance to buy coastal homes ?because prices are so low in many locations compared to where they?ve been in the past.?

Whether you are in the market for a La Jolla investment property, or are looking for assistance in selling a distressed property in the area, a skilled real estate agent is your best asset for securing the best possible value. For expert guidance and local market insight, contact me, Vicki Johnson, to schedule a consultation today. Visit www.vrjrealestate.com.

Annapolitans Bike Eight States in Eight Days For MS - Annapolis Patch

Three Annapolis residents plan to bike their way through eight states in eight days to raise money and awareness about?Multiple Sclerosis (MS) this October.

For Glenn Drake, of Annapolis, the 550-mile ride is personal. His mother-in-law suffers from the disease.?

He's taking the?MS Great 8?8 State Tour, which was started three years ago by the MS Great 8 Foundation, in her honor along with 20 other people from eight different states.?This year's route runs from Maine to New York City and takes place from Oct. 7 to 14.

Jan Sullivan, also of Annapolis, is riding for more than her love of biking.

"My father is one reason I ride," Sullivan said. "He passed away from complications from?MS?in 1992."

Dave Bethel, a Severn resident and U.S. Naval Academy grad, does the ride every year. He said every person on this ride has been touched in some way by the disease.

He also takes credit for recruiting several members of the team. Drake joked that he's riding because Bethel made him.

MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, according to the National?Multiple Sclerosis Society. Symptoms can be as mild as numbness in the limbs or as severe as paralysis.?

The disease also hits home for MS Great 8 Foundation?co-president Mike Zimits who lives with the disease.

"The ride is to inspire people living with MS like myself to not let the disease stop them from living their passions and dreams," Zimits said. "We don't have a cure, but we can get up every day and 'finish the race.' We can go out and do what we want to do. We can keep it from beating us and owning us."

The other purpose of the ride is to "let people know that MS is alive and kicking, so to speak."

Zimits said people often don't realize that more than one person an hour being diagnosed in the U.S.

The goal this year is to raise at least $200,000 for?various chapters of the National MS Society. The rider's local chapter of the national foundation will receive the donations that he or she raised.

In 2011, a team of 16 riders raised $167,000 and in 2010?the ride's first year?a team of 10 people raised $116,000.

"Every dollar raised goes to them," Zimits said. "There's no 30 percent going to pay somebody's salary."

Zimits has been impressed with the Maryland contingent of his bike riding pack.?Last year the Maryland part of the team raised approximately $44,000 for the ride.

"They're great folks," Zimits said. "They're awesome. Dave [Bethel], he's a larger than life guy, and I love him. The guy's heart is as big as he is ...?Jane is like our hood ornament; she's so tiny. She's also very dedicated view towards MS with the history of MS with her father. I think she's a great rider."

Zimits said the commradery among the riders has been one of the big positives to come out of the annual event.

"Those folks?as different as they all look?are such similar souls," Zimits said. "We laugh together, and we cry together, and we help each other up the hills together and we have a good time."

(AP) ? A gunman who killed a former co-worker in cold blood in the shadow of the Empire State Building and then was shot dead by police after he turned his gun on them spent long hours in the quiet of Central Park, photographing hawks and marveling over nature's beauty.

His victim was a gregarious salesman, beloved by his nieces and nephews as the fun uncle who could talk with equal expertise about the New York Jets and the women's fashion accessories he sold.

Investigators on Saturday were trying to piece together what caused Jeffrey Johnson, a T-shirt designer, to ambush Steve Ercolino, an apparel company vice president, a day earlier outside the Manhattan offices of the company where they once were colleagues.

Police said Johnson hid behind a car and then killed Ercolino with five gunshots as he arrived for work. Johnson then was shot by two police officers who confronted him on a busy sidewalk.

Security camera footage showed the officers had only an instant to react when Johnson suddenly turned as they approached and pointed his gun at them, his arm cocked as if to fire.

Their encounter was over in eight seconds. The officers, who had been standing nearly close enough to shake hands with Johnson and had no opportunity to take cover, fired almost immediately.

Nine bystanders were wounded in the 16-shot volley, all by stray or ricocheting police bullets, police confirmed Saturday. None of their injuries was life-threatening, police said.

Police investigating Johnson's killing of Ercolino were eyeing bad blood between them from when they worked together at Hazan Import, a garment district business where Ercolino was a vice president of sales.

Johnson and Ercolino had traded harassment accusations when they worked together, police said, and when Johnson was laid off from the company a year ago he blamed Ercolino, saying he hadn't aggressively marketed his new T-shirt line.

After Johnson's layoff, neighbors said, he continued to leave his apartment every day in a suit.

Internet records listed Johnson as the administrator of the website for a business called St. Jolly's Art, which sold iron-on graphic art for T-shirts. Art for sale on the site included stylized drawings of fighter planes and muscle cars and whimsical "seafaring vignettes" featuring pirate maidens and tall ships.

Johnson also was part of a community of bird watchers and photographers who document hawks and other wildlife living in Central Park, a few blocks from his home.

In one email to another bird watcher who works at The Associated Press, Johnson wrote tenderly about spending a winter night watching ducks in the park.

"Near midnight by the Harlem Meer I watched a little 'flotilla' of Mallards swimming and softly honking ... fifteen degree temp and they were carrying on unfazed. Just remarkable," he wrote.

His photographs of Central Park's hawk population appeared regularly on blogs tracking the birds.

A neighbor who often saw Johnson, 58, said he was always alone.

"I always felt bad," said Gisela Casella, who lived a few floors above Johnson in a modest apartment building on the Upper East Side. "I said, 'Doesn't he have a girlfriend?' I never saw him with anybody."

Ercolino, 41, was described by his relatives as the opposite of a quiet loner.

His eldest brother, Paul Ercolino, said he was a gregarious salesman who often traveled, had a loving girlfriend and was the life of any family gathering.

"He was in the prime of his life," he said. "He would do anything for anybody at any time. ... He was so wonderful with my children. At Christmastime, he was the one who always had the best presents for the kids."

Paul Ercolino said his brother, known to nieces and nephews as Uncle Ducky because of his nearly blond hair, had followed his father into the garment industry after growing up in Nanuet, just north of New York City, then later worked in women's handbags and accessories. He said his brother had never mentioned to the family that he had any problems with a co-worker.

Hazan Import Corp. executives didn't return phone calls seeking comment Friday.

Johnson, after waiting for Steve Ercolino to come to work, walked up to him, pulled out a .45-caliber pistol and fired at his head, police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. After Ercolino fell to the ground, Johnson stood over him and shot four more times, a witness told investigators.

"Jeffrey just came from behind two cars, pulled out his gun, put it up to Steve's head and shot him," said Carol Timan, whose daughter, Irene Timan, was walking to Hazan Imports at the time with Ercolino.

In security camera footage released by the police, Johnson can be seen walking calmly down the sidewalk after the shooting, distancing himself slightly from the other pedestrians, who appear to have no awareness that anything is wrong.

But when two police officers approach in a hurry, Johnson turns and pulls a handgun from a bag. Then, the scene explodes into action. People seated on a bench behind the gunman and pedestrians standing close to the two officers run for their lives.

Only a young child seems not to react, strolling out of view of the camera as adults all around leap away in terror.

Startled New Yorkers later looked up from their morning routines in the crowded business district to see people sprawled in the streets bleeding and a tarp covering a body in front of the tourist landmark.

"I was on the bus, and people were yelling 'Get down! Get down!" accountant Marc Engel said. "I was thinking, 'You people are crazy. No one is shooting in the middle of midtown Manhattan at 9 o'clock in the morning.'"

It was over in seconds, he said ? "a lot of pop, pop, pop, pop, one shot after the other."

Afterward, he saw sidewalks littered with the wounded, including one man "dripping enough blood to leave a stream."

The officers who fired were part a detail regularly assigned to patrol landmarks such as the 1,454-foot-tall skyscraper since the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said.

Kelly, the police commissioner, said the officers who confronted Johnson had "a gun right in their face" and "responded quickly, and they responded appropriately."

"These officers, having looked at the tape myself, had absolutely no choice," he said.

A witness had told police that Johnson fired at the officers, but authorities say ballistics evidence doesn't support that. Johnson's gun held seven rounds, they said. He fired five times at Ercolino, one round was still in the gun and one was ejected when officers secured it, authorities said.

A loaded magazine was found in Johnson's briefcase.

Johnson legally bought the gun in Sarasota, Fla., in 1991, but he didn't have a permit to possess it in New York City, authorities said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said New York still is the safest big city in the country, on pace to have a record low number of murders this year.

"But we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence," he said of the shooting, following mass shootings at a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin.

The nine people wounded outside the Empire State Building were all from New York City, except for a woman from Chapel Hill, N.C. They suffered graze wounds or other minor injuries.

Metal detectors and bag searchers have been standard at the Empire State Building since 1997, when a gunman opened fire on the 86th-floor observation deck, killing one tourist and wounding six others before fatally shooting himself.

The skyscraper remained open Friday throughout the mayhem, although its workers became witnesses.

"We were just working here and we just heard bang, bang, bang!" said Mohammed Bachchu, a worker at a nearby souvenir shop.

He said he rushed from the building and saw seven people lying on the ground, covered in blood.

Rebecca Fox said she saw people running down the street and initially thought it was a celebrity sighting, but then she saw a woman shot in the foot and a man dead on the ground.

"I was scared and shocked and literally shaking," she said. "It was like 'CSI,' but it was real."
