Christ School captures state golf title

GREENSBORO ? As the headmaster?s son, Jeff Krieger is used to being a big man on campus at Christ School.

He?s even bigger after Tuesday.

Krieger shot a 1-under 71, capping the senior?s two-day score of 139 to lead the Greenies to the NCISAA 3-A golf championship at Greensboro Country Club.

Krieger was not only the tournament?s medalist, but was named the NCISAA 3-A Player of the Year based on his season-long performance.

Rhyne Jones (146) joined Krieger on the NCISAA 3-A all-state team, with Cory Sciupider (148) and McKay Tye (155) also counting toward Christ School?s score (588).

Forsyth Country Day (596) finished eight shots back in second place.

Krieger held the first-round lead Monday after shooting a four-under 68 and relaxed his nerves by carding a birdie on the first hole of Tuesday?s second round.

?Sleeping on the lead is never an easy thing,? said Krieger, whose father, Paul, presides over Christ School.

?I just told myself that today was just another round. I was relaxed and realized I had plenty of opportunities.?

Indeed, Krieger?s final round included four birdies.

Krieger has signed to continue his college career at Purdue and will be joined at an Indiana college by Sciupider (Notre Dame). Tye has signed with High Point.

Jones, who is a junior, hails from Blowing Rock while the rest of Christ School?s top-four players live in either the Buncombe or Henderson County area.

Christ School?s state championship is its second in two years, following up on one from 2010.

?We played a really difficult schedule purposely,? Greenies coach David Gaines said.

?I think it truly helped us to go up against the best teams we could find. All these guys have been really good friends for a long time. When you coach a golf team, you?re with these guys a lot and it?s just a great group.?
