The first be well Centers opened in early June at the Central Park Rec Center and Hiawatha Davis Rec Center in Denver. ?The goal of the centers is to provide a physical place grounded in each neighborhood that provides residents with access to affordable, preventative health care information and resources in a trusted community setting.
The be well Centers are located in the be well Zone, a series of five key Denver and Aurora neighborhoods that were chosen as part of the be well Health & Wellness Initiative. A ground-breaking grassroots movement of communities coming together to take charge of their health and wellness, the initiative is being undertaken by the Stapleton Foundation.
Each be well Center offers a series of classes that are available ? and free ? to ages 15 and up. They are geared toward beginners, and are facilitated by licensed professionals. The classes and programs cover physical fitness, nutrition, heart health screenings, Hunger Free Colorado application assistance, information on the Affordable Care Act, and grocery store tours.
Hoped for outcomes are as follows:
- Increase resident?s opportunities to learn how to eat healthy, exercise and obtain preventative services.
- Increase the number of residents engaging in physical activity and consuming health foods on an ongoing basis.
- Serve as a resource where residents seek screenings, vaccines, physicals and immunizations, nutrition guidance, support groups, physical education and other preventative care services.
Again, all be well classes and activities are free, and a Denver Parks & Rec membership is not required. For more information on be well classes, hours, and directions to the centers, visit the be well website.
