How to Keep Baby Safe ? Without Being a Helicopter Parent - Babble

?Everyone knows a helicopter parent or two. The ones that might give you a phone call before a playdate to ask if you did a ?toddler?s view? of your home yet for safety purposes. To see if the apple juice you?re about to serve is free of toxins (while their kid just picked their nose and ate it). The ones who seem exhausted all the time and you never get to really talk to because they?re so busy hunting down their child and keeping them safe.

There are safety and health concerns everywhere we go. With the amount of information, parenthood one upping over who is the safest, and ?friendly? scare tactics, it?s easy to get caught up in the what if?s and unknowns of your child?s well being. After all, when it comes to safety ? is there ever really a good enough? When can you know your best is enough?

Before you break the bank and lose sleep (and possibly friends) over it all, consider this: most parents, including you, are doing the best they can with the knowledge they have. But most of the time, I?ve learned something from a friend or article that kindly pointed out something I did or missed that might be dangerous.

A car seat buckled incorrectly. Wall plugins that a child was able to pull out. Sharp things on the counter that my daughter could reach.

However, all children have accidents. Most are minor, and take a simple fix or new way of doing to prevent it from happening again. To prevent major ones, take a look at your home and child?s increasing abilities every so often. As they get taller, things are easier to reach. If they can crawl, they can reach things to shove in their mouth. Not everything has to be baby proofed at one time, many things come and go through the first years.

When your child is old enough to understand certain things, telling them about fire, water, house rules, cars, the street ? those will start to make safety concerns a little easier to keep a handle on. While a 2 year old might think running towards the street is a game, a 3 year old can understand it?s off limits and why. It?s a natural progression and it makes parenthood a little easier on us all.
