IRVING ? The Dallas Cowboys could have caught a break in regard to the amount of money they had to pay former Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley to be their wide receivers coach considering how much money the University of Tennessee?still owes him.
Dooley was hired to replace wide receivers coach Jimmy Robinson, who is now a senior coaching consultant for the Cowboys.
Dooley made $2 million in 2012 and was signed through the 2016 season when Tennessee fired him Nov. 18 after going 15-21 in three seasons for the Volunteers, winning only four Southeastern Conference games.
Tennessee has to pay Dooley a $5 million buyout, according to his contract that was obtained by The Dallas Morning News through an open records request. Dooley, 44, will receive the $5 million from Tennessee in equal monthly payments over the next four years, according to his contract.
?In December, I really wasn?t looking for any opportunity,? Dooley said Thursday at Valley Ranch. ?There?s an element when you go through [being fired], you don?t have a manual for it. It?s the first time in your career, what do you do? I felt like the first thing I needed to do was get right, get myself right. Because there?s a lot of emotions that go through when you don?t have the success that you wanted to have and it ends quicker than you expect. Really the month of December, that?s what I was doing.
?In January, I wasn?t really looking for anything. Quite frankly, this opportunity was one that really excited me and I couldn?t turn down, because not only the amount of respect I have in Coach [Jason] Garrett, but also it?s the Dallas Cowboys, and I?ve got a great amount of respect for the Jones family and belief in what they?re doing, and I was just real excited to be a part of it.?
